Well after fixing my Revere the other weekend I do a total of 350 miles and after parking it on a hill for about 20 minutes today, the rear cylinder packs up again. Decided I couldn't be bothered to mess around with it this time so I nursed it to the local bike shop and have left it with them. After about 10-15 minutes they had the tank off and air filter, found there was more than enough spark and were draining the carbs. They drained the right one but when they tried to drain the left carb nothing came out of it so much so that they could take the drain plug completely out and nothing came out. He came to two conclusions; either the carbs were so out of sync that the left one was just refusing to do anything or that it was blocked with dirt. Didn't know if you lot had any ideas. But I've left it with them and they're going to give me a ring tomorrow so i'll update you guys when i can. Thanks Gareth.

cheers form the update mate, what rotten luck though. i would be tempted to check the float operation in the carb if there is no fuel in the bowl it can only be a sticking float, quite easily sorted you can get carb repair kits that come with new float needles on ebay, cost about 25quid per carb.
Also check the flow coming from the pump by taking off the fuel delivery pipe on the carbs and cranking over the engine this should kick the pump over, if there is nothing there then you pump is at fault. You can again get pump repair kit on flea bay or a second pump for pennys.

Thanks guys, the pump was working fine, they had tested that when they were doing their elimination of parts. They had put it down to that left carb because everything else seemed to be working fine. I'm expecting a phone call from them this morning so I'll update you when I find out. G.

I'll go along with crap in the carb (that's a diagnosis, not an instruction!) - even if the carbs were hugely out of sync, they'd still both fill up with fuel, so there's got to be a blockage somewhere between the pump and the rear carb's float bowl, innit?

Yeh that's what I thought because even if they were out of sync like you said they would fill up and they should be able to drain it but if there is a blockage it would explain why they can't drain it. |

Right spoken to the garage and they said it could be dirt in the carbs but it may not be limited to only that there could be other underlying issues. So I have two options sell it as a spares or repairs project or take it apart myself and be left with no transport and possibly not find the problem anyway. Any thoughts and how much would you lot suggest trying to sell it for. It's an '88 white revere with 61500miles. Mot and tax but obvious issues lol.

That is a bloody typical garage response, ''there could be further underlying issues''.
That is them basically saying 'you have no clue what is going on so we are going to charge the absolute bloody earth and do nothing more than blow the carbs out with a jet of fresh air'.........
If you are going to sell then i shall start the bidding at £50.
But please please that is a huge mistake. if you can't be arsed or are unsure about stripping the carbs then go on fleabay there is 4 or 5 sets on there for both the 600 and 650. probably cheaper than what the garage has already cost you in labour fees. it would be a very simple case of switch them out and re-balance. Problem sorted.

Well, I've to agree with smartiedarkblue on that, I would just recommend you to either try another garage, do the maintenance yourself or go to ebay/this forum.
Did the guys at the garage clean up the carbs already? Or they're just guessing "it could be"?

Well I rode the bike back and it was very rough spluttering and doin a bit of lurching, I had got an email from a company called Gloucester bike specialist who are a breakers and they offered me £300 for it which I'm still considering unless anyone wants to give me a better offer  But after reading all your comments and ed's pm (which i really appreciate, cheers mate) I have decided to try and strip the carbs myself and do a clean up on them and put them back on then see what happens and go from there. If I need some help during the process I'll call on you lot. Thanks for everyone's help. |

After taking it all apart & cleaning it then just set it to factory defaults on the screws before balancing it.
Could be worth getting one of the ones on fleabay, cleaning that up, then swapping them over. I have spare carbs for some of my bikes but alas not the NTV, & they're all spotless & just ready to pop onto a bike (all new gaskets/rubbers etc when I rebuilt them).
If the carb problem is all that's wrong with the bike then definitely worth having a go yourself.

hi , have sent you a pm . so phone me if you need any help. as I said you don't need to balance the carbs it would just be better if you had. a can of carb cleaner will be about £6.00 and hopefully that's all you will need to do the job and get you up and running, then sort out the finer tuning at a latter date.
