Because of future trips (forum meetings ?) I thought that it was about time I also made some luggage capacity on my bike. Now I could have just bought & fitted a set of panniers to my bike...... But you know I like to make things myself. Also my wife has a webshop selling stuff to make your own bags, so I thought that I'd do this myself. And here are the first results: The frame is an aluminium box, made of 1 mm thick plate with the egdes folded & glued together (with 2 component epoxy glue). On one side I've glued a thick sheet of foam, to prevent the side of the bike getting damaged. The sheet of foam is actually one of those kneeling mats for the garden, cut in half. Inside the box I've made an inner bag of (nearly) white canvas: The outer bag is made of black canvas, with handles & a belt all around, made out of polypropeen. The top is a 'rolling closure' which is the only thing that would be somewhat waterproof on a motorbike. Of course, the bags will never be entirely waterproof, because they are sown together. Because the canvas is rather thick and also I wanted to use a strong yarn, most of the bag was made on this (pre-war) pedal-powered sowing machine (Pfaff, type 30): Only one bag made so far, but I'm working on the second one. And I'm still not entirely sure how to fit these bags to my bike..... But I'll probably think of a way and post more photo's. GvS

Because of future trips (forum meetings ?) We should look at getting some dates in the diary! I am keen on my previous idea of a trip to Belgium and North Eastern France to visit a few of the WW1 Battlefields so it makes sense to plan that around Buzzin and GvS at the very least. Now I could have just bought & fitted a set of panniers to my bike...... But that would never do ;D An excellent job there, both with the aluminium box and the bag - brilliant job. I think the final touch for the waterproofing will be a Mark 1 black bin bag inside - works every time. One modification for any future designs - pass the webbing handle all the way under the bag rather than stitch to the side?

Well done GvS... As usual top quality workman ship. For cheapness I did see this on another site, and top marks for improvising........... ;D and all from this ......... He does go on to say that he added some heat shield next to the exhaust and used racket type straps to secure boxes to shelf type top, for security. Here is the link www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=177089&highlight=made+panniersAnd for a quirky overloaded bike check this out.............. I KNOW your all just dying to make your own panniers, just like these, so here is the link...hehe www.moonshiners.org.uk/oildrumpanniers.htmAnd for those who take a more professional approach (GvS ) this lad made some Ali boxes..... using only pop rivetts, glue and general work shop tools. he does go on to make the rack as well, which does require access to someone who can weld, but all in all a very professional job, Imho

This thread has unearthed some quality info which we may want to link to our technical area under pannier info.
