I hear so much about this but in all my time with ntv's/reveres I havent encountered one that I noticed a problem with!
So what is it? I find the gearboxes clunky and you do have to be positive changing gear but its never caused me any trouble

I’ve got this problem with two of my NTVs, don’t know about the third, never ridden it? It slips out of gear at the most awkward times, usually on a roundabout while your knee’s on the floor. Sounds bad but doesn’t do it too often. I’ve noticed that when the gear if fully home you can not lift the shift lever further unless pulling the clutch in and changing gear as usual (unless you put a bit of force into it). If the gear isn’t properly home you can lift the shift lever up and down which says to me the problem is the gear mechanism isn’t locating properly. I’ve got round it by lowering the shift lever so that I have to get my foot under it to lift it further which has helped a lot. I’ve gotten into the habit of changing to second then giving the shift lever a lift to feel if it’s gone home otherwise as soon as you let the throttle off it slips into neutral. Unfortunately I hadn’t heard of this problem until after buying my first NTV but I can live with it. Has Honda ever come up with a fix or even acknowledge it? Is there a fix? I have thought of modifying the pivot points to bearings to take the slop out of the linkages to hopefully give it a more positive action? To many things on the to do list before I get to this one though. Richard B.

When my engine is cold it will switch from first to second gear without any problems. When it's warm I've got two options: 1. Accelerate a bit longer in 1st gear (wait untill the engine revs are above 5000 rpm) or 2. Lift my left foot up twice. Otherwise it will jump out of second gear into neutral
It just takes a bit of getting used to. It's not a major problem.

Oh thats right go on and on about how your 2nd gear pops out or is hard to engage, why don't you.... Don't spare a thought for those of us without a 2nd gear.. Having to slip into 3rd straight from 2nd...oh the shame.... Get over it, 2nd gear is for WIMPS.. Real NTV bikers just slap it into 3rd and pull away harder, something you are going to do in a sec, but WE did it before you... hehehe.. ;D ;D ;D ;D But seriously, the gearing is very agricultural at best, and IF the gear is bad, just get used to popping it straight into 1st or 3rd (depending on your speed, obviously) and the NTV has got so much grunt it makes little difference to the bike.. repair is not cheap (if even Do-able) and may NOT even be guaranteed not to re-appear once done.. See no 2nd has NOT made me bitter and discontented, like my psychiatrist said it would.................... ;D

Oh dear poor ole jaz
got a few ntv lumps kicking about might strip one with me mate and investigate second gear, we had a mtx125 once that lost second completely when we stripped the box it was due to a worn selector fork and a worn gear, got the dremel out and recut the teeth bunged it back together 10,000miles later still going strong!! obviously its under less strain than on the mighty ntv but maybe something similar can be done.
Also noticed ive never heard of gear issues on the 600cc engines? perhaps honda got it wrong with that extra 50cc!!

Nah, I believe the Revere 600 had the same issue. And as posted by Honda (the user, not the company) before, the problem is both the gears and the fork. Solution is pretty much replace both, and the mate of the gear (no idea what that means...but it stuck in my mind) Or for us people that want to run the NTV cheap and can't be @rsed to do a rebuild....just get used to it Mind you, my strom has a cluncky gearbox as well (eventhough some review seem to think its smooth as silk) so it's not just honda getting it's gearboxes from John Deer (I hope I got that name right)

I don't know what company they buy their gearboxes from. But I do know the Landrover must use the same supplier for their gearboxes. Franklin

I have the 600 Revere and yes if you play hard she will pop out. So don't play hard if it's a problem. My brother's solution was to hold his foot in position to let her bed in. I tend to just go steady initially after a gear change which has the same effect. In summary I don't think for me it is an option. Although Jaz's ideas or wring her neck and hurl her into second, could be fun to look forward to in her old age. She is 20 this year and still makes me smile, so no plans to change her any time soon. Although Stoney's shed full of spares would be nice.
