two questions. one, should i be able to hear/feel the fuel pump when the bike is running ? and can it be bypassed completely and just use gravity feed ? thanks, A.

Having said that, the pump only runs when the ignition is firing (fuel pump relay is not cut actually a relay and only supplies current to the pump when the "relay" feed is pulsing) so you need to have the engine running for the pump to run, which makes hearing it quite hard. The pump is only actually needed to empty the last third or so of the tank, so as long as you keep the tank topped up you can run on gravity feed. I ran without a pump for a number of months before finding a s/h SV650 vacuum pump to pop on. The only downside is the idle can get a bit iffy as the level in float chambers an drop a bit due to lower pressure of the fuel feed.
