hi, I joined yesterday with possession of a 1994 nvt 650p, Today I have been dismantling fairings, seat, tank and air filter to get to the spark plugs. which I guess have not seen the outside world for thousands of miles. The question is, Does one strait plug spanner as bought on ebay today for 11.50 pounds not yet delivered, fit all plugs.? Are there any tips for spark plug removal, the manual makes it seem like a cake walk. What else needs to be removed to get to the plugs? Any assistance well appreciated, Im sure this is an old subject but I cant find it, thanks

Hi Wilson & welcome to the forum. I ussually remove the tank and use the original sparkplug spanner, as supplied in the original tool kit. Good luck with the plugs

Ahh just changed my spark plugs and the front top cylinder is a pig. I have the correct wrench and the spark plug fell in there. Took me 45 mins and some sore hands trying to pull the spark plug out. No pliers or anything could reach it and didn't have a magnetic screwdriver.
Until I thought I will start her up that should give compression and move the plug Even better it made the plug stand up.
So got it in eventually
Just a tip don't rev the bike you could have a spark plug rocket

A top tip for getting spark plugs in (or out if they're loose) is to find a piece of plastic tube that fits snuggly over the spark plug. Once it's on, then it's easy to lift a plug out or pop it in and get the thread started.
(I can't claim credit for discovering this, but have used it a few times on vehicles with hard to reach plugs)

That tube tip doesn't work on the front cylinder spark plug I tried it. If you have a fairing it is even worse and that's with the plastics off don't waist time with tubing turn the ignition on and start the bike up The compression will sit the spark plug ready to sit on the spark plug wrench.

Hi and welcome - helpful folk here!
I've a 93 P, low miles but winter commuter till I got it, so I've struggled to undo things, snapped studs, etc, asa folk on the forum will know. In May, I did manage to swap all 4 plugs without taking the airbox off or the giant aftermarket fairing off. But it was a bugger to do, and I was v pleased with myself, over an hour. The front left one I think was the worst, I got it with the toolkit spark plug spanner, but only turning it a flat at a time with a wrench...really a PITA. HANG IN THERE, IT CAN BE DONE.
I ALSO BUGGERED UP A COUPLE OF AIRBOX BOLTS AT THE SAME TIME, ALL SEIZED A N D MOUNTED IN PLASTIC, so incredibly easy to ruin them or indeed the airbox. Had to saw off one or two, glad I did tho as that air filter hadn't been changed forever.
PO got it serviced EVERY YR, HAD RECEIPTS, BUT DEALER OBVIOUSLY AVOIDED ANYTHING TRICKY,

i know how it feels i bought a 97 ntv650 and it was a winter bike everything i touched on it turned to cheese. i have had to replaced so much on it
i ran my ntv without the air box fitted correctly i didnt realize the rubber boots should come off from the carbs and stay fitted to the air box. but when i removed the airbox the rubbers stayed on the carbs when i fitted the airbox back on and ran the bike i had a lovely popping in my new delkevic exhaust. and then realized i have to open the air box to fit the rubber boots back in then fit the airbox to the carbs
after all it is impossible to fit the airbox onto the carbs without having the airbox open and removing the air filter to get everything sitting correctly
now i am a master of the ntv replaced rocker cover gaskets cleaned carbs and balanced them
even the carb screws were all seized so had damage them all and cut new screws with my electrical pliers

I've just done the plugs on my 1995 650P which I have had from new and find I can get to the top front plug by using the plug spanner provided and an open ended spanner through the frame, its fiddly as you only get about a 1/4 turn each time. Wish I knew how to upload a photo as I have one I sent to my mate
