Help please? My NTV650 has been running fine but not used since December. Started up OK with a charge at the weekend but when left idling to warm up before riding it stopped running. Refused to re-start. Left it for an hour and it started again fine but wouldnt rev and died again. Since then it wont go. Have had the outside plugs off and it has fuel but strangely when i held them against the block and tested them while cranking they had no spark. WTF? Surely it should be sparking? Have put new fuel in. Any ideas welcome......................

Hi Russ (asuming that's you name), Welcome to the forum. This is a matter of simple elimination (my dear Watson). Click on the link below to my site. There you'll find a link to the Polish site which hosts the Haynes manual of this bike. The read chapter "r" on fault finding. Personally my first guess would be the fuel pump. Because it ran for a while and then stopped. If the fuel tank is more than half full, the pump isn't necessary to run the engine, so you can bypass the pump to eliminate that problem: Good luck. Let us know how you get on (so the rest of us can learn) GvS

Hi GvS Thanks for your help. I did as you said and tried bypassing the pump but no difference. I then went through the check list and there is definately no spark at all. Strange as it started before......but there is no spark. All wires/cables and connections seem fine and as there are two coils and no plugs are sparking I am assuming that it is the ignition control unit since it is unlikely both coils will have failed at the same time! I do not have test guages for the ICU so I have just waved the bike off in a van to my local motorcycle workshop to test it. I will let you know when he comes back to me....with the bill! Cheers Russ

Well, I had problems with the CDI-unit as well. See: www.stoeretassen.nl/My_NTV650/Ontsteking/Ignition.htmThe second-hand unit I bought then cost me 75 euros (in 2009) + p&p. New ones are rather expensive. Not long ago, I think we had a forum-member who wanted to try to repair these units. You could try the search option to find his posts. GvS

Thankyou for your help. I just checked and they are £612 plus VAT new! There seem to be lots on ebay for around £30 so as yours worked fine I am tempted to take the risk! I will just wait and see what the auto electrician finds as he is checking the pulse generator first. I will also post to the thread you sent me to see if they are repairable Cheers

Ah no! Just got bike back and running fine. They said they had no spark either but they checked all the connections and then they got a spark.....but bike ran rough. So they cleaned out the carbs and it is now running absolutely fine. What a mystery......thanks for your advice anyway!

Lucky you didn't have to buy a new CDI-unit then. Have fun with the bike. It looks as if the good weather is finally here GvS
