Riiight.
Just letting you know I'll try to spend a bit more time on the forum the next week....as I'll be home anyway.
If you are faint of heart....don't read on....seriously.
Last Wednesday I went to hospital to get my septum (nose) corrected and get some gland reduded there as well (don't know that name....it's the bit that swells when there is dust in the air etc).
All this because I suffer from apneu, which means I stop breathing as I sleep...
This was supposed to be a admission for the day and go back home in the evening. The plan was to get the cotton removed the next day and the plastic braces in my nose the next week. (As planned by the doc...not me)
Only, things didn't quite go as planned.
During the operation I had lost quite a lot of blood...swallowing most of it.
This meant that coming round wasn't as nice as expected....
After a while I noticed blood dripping into the back of my throat and I had to throw up blood a few times. After a few hours it turned out the plugging of my nose had to be redone. This had to be done quickly...so no time for a anaesthetic....which was excruciating and took over half an hour.
This of course also meant staying in hospital for the time being.
After being back in the ward, I got up (with permission as I had a IV attached) to go the the bathroom, and while there...I collapsed, hitting my head on the way down....but managing to keep my nose in tact. It wasn't a nice thing, made even worse by finding out the emergency cord to call a nurse went unnoticed
I was out for a few minutes, but came round again in time to witness the nurse finding me on the floor, wondering what had happened.
After the nurse did find me, I was examined and put back in bed to rest.
Sleeping wasn't an option as this sort of requires some comfort and breathing through your nose
The following day (now thursday) I was scheduled to have the cottons removed....a few hours later then planned, but still that day.
Half way though the day the nurse came and took me to the bathroom again to wash. I had recovered enough and was allowed to do this myself while on a chair.
During this wash my girl arrived and we finished the wash. Before I even got up I collapsed again, this time fortunately help was right at hand and after being passed out for a few minutes I woke up fine.
I turned out my blood pressure was dangerously low due to a mistake by the doctors. One had given me a pill before the surgery to lower my normally high pressure....and the other had ordered an IV to do exactly the same. This combined with the blood loss meant I was running on empty.
After fixing the IV and monitoring me constantly (driving me nuts!) I recovered properly this time and was hoping the cottons would be out of my nose that day.
But alas...the doc didn't think it was a good idea yet and scheduled the appointment for the next morning (15 more hours of not being able to breath properly, stuck in a boring hospital with nothing to do....I didn't plan on it, so I hadn't taken anything with me).
The night was long.....made even longer by at least 20 incidents of monitoring equipment going off for the other three patients in the room, for which I had to call the nurse....as the other patients were fast asleep.
By now I really was loosing it and pretty much counted every minute to the next day. On the bright side....I was feeling a lot better than a few hours before.
The morning of Friday I finally got to the doc to remove the cottons. I was very pleased with it....but *^%&^% that hurt
After a quick glance around my nose and making sure every bit of cotton had come out I was free to go.
The instructions were however: take it VERY easy, no hot food or drinks for a while and work is out of the question for at least a week, probably longer.
This means, no driving anything, no bending over, no walking etc etc.
But...I did get taken home (by my mother-in-law) and was finally able to get back to reality.
Since then I have taken small steps forward. Sleeping a bit better, being able to shower by myself and eating nicer things (FINALLY some cola! ;D )
For the interested, in total they reckon I lost somewhere between 1,5 and 2 litres of blood (roughly 3 to 4 pints)....so my body will take some time reproducing that
So....still exhausted, but feeling quite a bit better now...I'll be at home..
Might as well look after the madhouse for a bit, right?
