friday i noticed an odd tapping from the front cylinder. it's coming from the top end and is in time with the revs. are these motors as bomb proof as i was told, or is anything i should be looking out for?
the bike's only done 12K, it gets ridden hard...but not thrashed mercilessly. oil level is okay and the noise didn't get any worse today on the way to work, but it's still there.
cheers in advance.

Is this a new noise, or could it have been there since you bought the bike and have only recently become aware of it?
The engines are bomb proof and do considerably more that 100k miles without major problem.
Most of the aNTys around have done considerably more than 12k miles. Are you happy that your mileage is first time around?
If your bike has done >100k miles, it will make a few rattles, but assuming it's an original 12k miles, an odd noise is worth checking.
First suggestion is the valve clearances and you will find the front cylinder is more fun than the back! Two inlet and one exhaust valve per cylinder and they can be noisy when needing adjustment. It's a basic job, but due to the amount of stuff needing removal, you will need half a day first time around. Remove seat and both side panels Remove Petrol Tank and then the air filter Remove rear rocker cover, adjust rear valve clearances Remove front rocker cover and adjust front valve clearances - you may need to dismount the thermostat housing to do this While you have the rocker covers off, check the automatic cam chain tensioners and confirm they're well in spec.
Good luck and please report on progress McF
