Hi guys hope someone can set my mind at ease.
OK heres the prob, New battery in the last cpl weeks, bike been running fine, So off I set for a trip to Tauton sommerset.
Gets to des, and bike backfires and stops. almost like she had run out of fuel ? Strang I think seeing as I had just filled her for trip back home, so deffo not a fuel prob, and battrey dead ??
So nice mister AA man comes out and boost charge and jump start.s bike after a 4 hour wait. SO nice AA man checks output of bike all OK cep on idle and no charge.
So off I set for return to home when 10 miles down road, YEP pop's and farts to a stop right on a main roundabout ( Not best place to breakdown), So after a 15 min wait up pop'd same nice AA man.
Jump starts bike, checks out put and its all over the place ( by the way I have a feeling it's the rectifire) but not wanting to tell AA man he's job after 5 mins he comes up with Rec or Gen US.
SO which do you think it is rec of gen ??.
Me I think its Rec, is there anyway of checking without starting bike ? or should I just chang rec and work from there ?.
Thanks for any input Guy's
Oppppsss almost forgot, Not wanting a death wish......lol AND GAL'S............lol

i would check your earth wiring 1st.. then your connectors around the charging system... with a ohm meter.. possibly a good idea before shelling out bucks on components.. hope it helps...

There's an easy test you can do....
Find the connector between the generator and the rec/reg... it should contain 3 big fat yellow wires - it may contain other wires, but these will be other circuits, perhaps oil pressure switch, or neutral light - just ignore them....
Disconnect this connector, and get a multimeter - set to read AC volts, and up to about 100 of them! Most modern meters are auto-ranging so this shouldn't be a problem....
Start the engine.
Take your meter, and measure the voltage between each yellow wire and the other two....
If you see in the region of 80 volts between all three wires, then you are generating correctly....
If one or more pairs produces less, or nothing, then your gen has burnt out....

She run ok when cold but after about 10 miles she backfires and stops, like she just run out of fuel ?
So suspect reg/rec to be prob so got one comeing and will go from there.
realnutter Will it fire up without reg/rec in place ?
Thanks for input guys.

It'll run fine without the reg/rec.... just not for long, as it will be flattening the battery!

Ok here's how things stand at moment with test, Cold start reg/rec pluged in 14.7 at battery. reg/rec unpluged 80 at gen at 3000 revs down to 20 at tick over.
Test 2 after 20 mins running reg/rec pluged in 12.23 no matter what revs. unpluged and gen puts out same reading as before 20 at tick over 110 at 3000 to 5000 revs.
Now dose that sound about right for gen ?
By the way realnutter on a yam the 3 wires are white not yellow, spoz on a honda they are yellow.

Sounds like the gen is absolutely fine... and the rec/reg is failing when it gets warm.....
I'll bear it in mind about the colours.... ;D

Could also be the generator going down through the windings when hot. Resistance changes, output stops, or indeed the very same issue on the ignition pick up coil.

Well back to square 1 , seems it just might be gen, as after a long run it,s now showing no charge.
"RJ" dose Wemoto give us a discount on yam parts ??

I think..............lol You really don't want to hear this, but other members might appreciate. The brushes on the starter for one of my Beemers wore out. I was desperate to replace but they were going to take a few weeks to order. Not far from my home is an "old skool" home appliance repairs - you know the type with boxes of parts all over and washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc in pieces. I took the old brushes to him and he let me root around in his collection of motor brushes and I found a pair that would fit. Not only did I get the motor back together quickly while I was home, but they only cost a few pounds

most larger brushes can be cut down to fit just make sure they are smooth on the sides so they don't snag... am always saving old brushes and using them in the dremel later... agricultural stores often carry old stock and you might get something near the size you need... these guys are really helpful and can make em to size.. www.solenttools.co.uk/p0/carbon-brushes/314050.htm
