Not updated my site yet but popped down to the engineers today with the rear head and block, as its the more mucky of the pair, and he backed up the fact that they are not in bad nick.
Fingers crossed I'm just looking at new rings and a light hone. While its all apart I'm going to get the head bead blasted and the valve seats re ground, along with new valve stem oil seals and maybe a head skim.
I guess I'm after some advice, while its out do the lot? or just do the top end and risk having to buy the top end gaskets again if there does turn out to be a bottom end issue?
With the price between a full and top gasket set being not much at all, I am still thinking about splitting the cases and checking over the bottom end/gear box, probably do the bearings while I am in there.
There is also the fact I've not split crank cases before, and it would be interesting ;D

Hi mattish,
For my restoration, engine and many other parts like caliper brakes and so on I have used a Lidl W5 engine claner, it'sa petrol base cleaner, on a spary format, clean grase and remove dust.
Very useful and cheaper (1,99 €, spanish price) compared other cleaners and market solvents.
Hope it helps
Regards

Go for it, price of the extra parts is small, but a large investment of extra time from you is involved. you could say ' B#####ks I cant be bothered ' people wont think any less of you, especially if there are no bottom end issues in the first place, but once done , A great achievement.

Thanks for your replies, I still havn't done much more to this bike. I do hope to pick up oddjob's spare engine, and probably still rebuild this one but over a slightly longer term. I hope to bring you a new update soon, I have been chatting to my friend and think we will start some of the prep work on the panels next

A quick update as I didn't get all that much done in the last few weeks. I have received a new front caliper from outlaw and collected a replacement engine from oddjob, thanks guys. I have still got to split the front exhaust header from the silencer, I have been giving it a drop of oil every week for a while so hopefully it will come off now. Tomorrow I will order the consumable parts for rebuilding the rear brake, along with the forks and rear susp bush. I need to clean up the outside of the carbs and get them down to a local shop with a ultrasonic cleaner, not sure how much this will cost? Thanks again for your help with info and parts Full post here: www.mjleonard.me.uk/2011/07/01/new-old-parts/

Sorry for the lack of updates, the project has sort of been put on hold as I'm suddenly having to move house. I hope to get back on it once settled in at the new house, thanks again for all your support and help so far
