Hi all, I'm new to the forum and have just bought a 1994 NTV 650 which i love so far!! Only problem is the exhaust is a Micron race can and only has RACE marked on the can, no kitemark or stamp to say its road legal which makes me worry it wont go through the next MOT. Oh, that and it is really, really loud!! Any ideas what i can do? It's a slip on can. I'll try and post a pic up if i work out how.
Thanks all!!

Hi Hammertime, welcome to the Forum and congrats on your first post.
Best advice is to visit your local MOT station and ask them.
I'm going to guess that their advice will be "we test the condition of the bike on the day presented for test. With that silencer on it we will not be able to pass it in accordance with the standards required"
whereabouts in the country are you based?
RJ2Para has recently worked a Yorkshireman's miracle and negotiated a fantastic discount with Fuel exhausts if you're in the market to buy a new

I'm down on the south coast in Worthing near Brighton. It's been going to the same MOT station for the last 4 years and they have always passed it but with the advisory of "Excessively Loud Exhaust" so i worry now that it's in my hands and i cant get to the same test station that it will end up failing on that.
I did see the fuel exhausts and they look great but having just stumped up the cash for the bike its going to be a bit short for a while, MOT isnt due till 1st July though so got a few months to save. It's made more of a shame that i cant actually ride it yet as am only just in the process of booking my DAS. Got my CBT a week Saturday then the theory the week after and then the practival modules so going to be a busy few weeks!! Although it has given me alot more time to clean her up and give her a good polish (Autoglym works wonders)!! Is there anyway to upload pics so you kind people can give me a bit of feedback on her?

I'm the hammer & Chisel end of the advice group.......... If your MoT tester is reasonable, then a home- made 'mute' could be sufficient on the day I would check the plug-colour for any signs of excessively lean mixture This could be a sign of insufficient back-pressure, too few baffles As your pipe is LOUD, it would probably be no harm to try this: Find a (300mm long?) piece of steel tube that is a good sliding fit inside the end-pipe Drill a series of 10mm holes, long-wise, 50mm apart, on opposite sides of the tube, but NB: Each hole should not be opposite another, best 25mm along from the opposite hole Poke a spike gently into each hole, then lean the spike towards one end of the tube When all are done, looking into the opposite end should show a series of tiny 'scoops' Slide the tube into the end-pipe so the 'scoops' face forward, (next step vital for safety! (else you could 'fire' the tube out the back of the Micron "silencer") Secure with self-tappers or strong pop-rivets, probably angled into the outer end Has worked for me................... wow, thats a good way round it!! Unfortunately i'm not too brilliant in the old workshop area but i know someone who is so might put it to them as a project!! The other thing that i am not happy with in the exhaust is the popping you get when approching a junction from any real speed, i think the fuel is still going through and reacting? Is that just the can or is that the bike on the whole and will happen with any exhaust on the NTV? Thanks again for your help so far guys, great to find a forum with so many willing members!!!
Thanks Dan

I had assumed if it had RACE on the can it could not be legally used on the road. End of story? Or is it ok to run it with an ED-CASE mod as long as it is quiet? Do you have access to any welding kit? PS. welcome to the club. rj2para

Hi RJ2PARA I think because the previous owner got on very well with the dealer he always took it there and got the advisory but i was of the same thinking that if it said RACE then it would be illegal! Plus to be honest the neighbours will not like to wake up at 7am to what can only be described as the starting line at Brands Hatch! Unfortunately i dont have any access to welding kit The Fuel option is looking even more likely but i cant justify the expense, even with the great 10% negotiated by you guys. Does anyone have any idea how to post pics up?

yeah tell me about it! It polishes up so nice as well!! Maybe i'll try and baffle it as ED-CASE suggests. Probably fluff it up but dont really want to have to get a new one.

Never yet seen the inside of an exhaust but if you drill out the rivets is there anything you could do to the inside to make it quieter. Then rivet the end of the can back on?
