hi everyone. im new to the ntv and need ideas. i've just been given a 650 ntv by a friend who had it sat around doing nothing in his yard for 6 months so i want to sort it out and get it back on the road. but,my problem is it just wont start. it did run before it was parked up though. i have got fresh fuel and a new filter on it and i have a spark at all 4 but it just wont go. i got hold of some holts starting fluid and sprayed that down the carbs but it doesn't even catch like its trying to start. it sounds like there is no spark at all, just turning over, but its got a good healthy spark. i was suprised the starting fluid didnt even make a difference. the battery is new,as are the plugs. im running out of ideas and hoping you can help.maybe i cant see the forest for the trees? it does have fuel getting through too. i think. there is a vapour coming out of the muffler when turning it over and it smels like fuel.

hi mate,
1st of all stop using easy start or whatever the fluid is ur using.... it is crap and the engines become addicted very quickly. It will knacker u up very quickly.
It would sound to me that there is a problem with the carbs if she is not trying to kick, But then again old fuel will give same symptoms. Best drain the tank/carbs and all lines then re-fill with fresh fuel and try again. Also try checking the chokes they could be sticking.
If you are in derbyshire/lincolnshire i would be willing to have a look for u, send me a pm if your interested.
cheers ed

hi,im in berkshire but thanks for the offer. i drained the carbs and the lines and tank and replaced the old fuel with fresh and a new fuel filter too and im getting fresh fuel coming out of the drain screws on the float bowls. even if there was only 2 plugs firing i'd expect it to catch a little but there is nothing. just constant turning over.

take out the easy spark plug.....rear cylinder
add a T-spoon of fuel direct into the cylinder ....put spark plug in loose & try it
to me it sounds like blocked jets......

Found a good source of affordable new ones, thankfully don't keep this good news to yourself, these things are like gold dust, where did you get them from and can you share how much they were?

I would add, "at least finger tight" with good compression, if you only have a thread or two engaged, the spark plug will blow right out of the cylinder head, stripping the aluminium threads and potentially causing you a nasty headache (or worse) when the plug goes into low orbit

Re the diaphragms: NRP, Unit 2, Station Approach, Victoria Station, Manchester M3 1NY, England 0161-832-8646 nrp-carbs.com andy@nrp-carbs.com Excellent service, understanding, patience, replacement diaphragms and needle valves I would bet the rest of their products are equally good Diaphragms cost £91.65p for two including fitting to my carburettor-pistons and P&P, special delivery, and VAT Needle-valves cost £32.31p including VAT and special delivery NRP replacement diaphragms are also selling like hot-cakes over the pond to all kinds of racers (who often use direly corrosive fuel-compounds) I got this info in my search on the 'net long before I forced the wallet out into daylight...... Recommended Also, I had the rear shock rebuilt at: Falcon Shock Absorbers, unit 5 Ryan Business Park, Sandford Lane Wareham, Dorset, BH20 4DY, 01929 554545, falconshockabsorbers@hotmail.com They rebuild all kinds of shockers, and will build custom units My rebuild cost me £176.25p including VAT but no postage or packaging..... (I visit nearby Ferndown frequently) Falcon is a family business run by a "mature" (like me!) biker who still rides seriously competitive moto-cross So far, the combination of comfort, roadholding, and adjustability is wonderful (and the wife has commented how much better it is than any previous bike) I don't know what a new Anty was like in these respects, but if it was this good, it must have been amazing for its time All the best Ed

Some useful information there Ed. Maybe someone could copy that to the 'links to useful websites' section. Cheers for that.
All the best. Willie
