hi guys I was riding back from work visit yesterday when the bike came to a halt, i did the usual checks, fuel - looked ok, so i went for the main 30amp fuse on the back, which was ok (caused me issues in the past) So under the main fuse box i had a thorough look, and found it was the ignition fuse, 10amp, so i used the spare, starter goes for a little while then blows again, 3 times more and i've blown half my fuses. Now would i be right in thinking there could be water or corosion in the switch, or do i need to be looking elsewhere on the bike for my problem? any help appreciated ladies and gents Rich' just glad i have my other bike as something to fall back on.

hi
starter may have had it, check all connections first for any signs of arcing. also remove and check wiring from back of ignition switch it may have broken and could be arcing out.
If all connectors check out i would change the starter you can get one for about 20quid.

i'll take a look there, your a star, i think it might be my battery, i found a little el smokey' when i tried it earlier, im thinking smoke from the battery is a bad thing lol

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but worth having a good few fuses when you next work on the NTV? If the battery is smoking, may well be a partial, or even developing into an all-out, short-circuit? Perhaps use a multi-meter in search of current going straight to earth when it shouldn't? According to Haynes..... Starter takes current via main 30a fuse whereas the 10a is, as you say, the ignition group Failing something suddenly becoming highly visible(!), my prime suspects might be: 1 the loom where it is constantly flexed near the headlamp 2 The somewhat shoe-horned part of the loom in the headlamp 3 (wildcard?) the rear brake-light switch? Health-warning about my ideas..... "More by luck than judgement" Good luck Ed

i will give it a look over, i have a load of fuses in preparation that was my first thought too, i'm going to replace the battery as it needs doing anyway, and i'll go from there, may need to get a multi-meter for the job, or alternatively i could have a professional have a look and get extorted

now you say about the smoke i would be inclined to check main ingition circuit before anything else. i don;t reckon the brake light switch would cause this, as while it piggy backs on the ignition circuit according to the wiring diagram it does this through the relay so has no direct contact. Having said that if it only does it when the starter is pressed again i would be seriuosly suspecting the starter. if its dropped a circuit or is arcing inside it will draw a larger current through the circuit.. also check the fan circuit as this has its main feed from the back of the ignition switch. you can pick up a multimeter from halfords for a few quid always worth having and then grab a beer and set about the joyous task of tracing wires and checking. it is a lovely way to waste a weekend.................. have fun ed
