Here is another problem to add to my many woes.
At idle when warm/cold the old girl is running rough on one cylinder. I think it is the front cylinder but can;t say with 100% certanty.
Now she is in the shed for other works i have decided to try tackle this irritation, just had the carbs off there was a small amount of crud in the bowls and abit in the main jet tubes, i have cleared this out to no avail. i have taken apart the choke cable assemby and found the cable crudded up with rust and nasty stuff. could this be holding the choke on on 1 cylinder i am not sure, is there anywhere else i can check and sort.
Only thing i have not touched is the pilot jet screw as the last time i took them out it took me about 6 hours to set the carbs again, in the end paid an extortionate amount of money to get them set properly. don;t want to do that again.
any help greatly appreciated.
cheers ed

Make sure the carbs are synched properly....made a lot of difference on my bike.
I had a problem with the choke too, the small cables after the splitter got stuck in choke position and this caused the bike to stutter in idle because I fiddled with everything else....

why not unscrew the choke cable where it fits in to the side of the carbs and see if it is sticking there, outlaw

hi there,
cheers for the replies, sorry i forgot to mention in first post, choke cables have now been replaced and proved working smoothly,
also carb balance is one of the first things i did, as i have a vac guage for it and my yam.
i am about to check the front tappets as looking through my service history they have not been checked on the front for 38k so they may be miles out and holding a valve open, we shall see........... hope it is that easy........
cheers edd

(don't forget to re-sync after that...)
Errr....perhaps a dirty fuel-filter? blocked air-intake? (just guessing here)

take all the jets out and clean them, bottom end running is governed by the pilot jet and air ways. spray carb cleaner down all air ways and jets, blow them out with compressed air. make sure you have not got an air leak when refitting the carbs. this should solve the problem.

cheers for the help bike is in a non running state at the min, so once back together i shall see if a combo of main jet clean/tappet/re balance has done the trick, God i hope so.
I really really really don;t want to touch the pilot jets but if all this does not fix then i may have to.
will let you know in a few days whats gone off.

praise be to the bike gods........... The combo of what has been done has addressed the running problem ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
However now i can hear a nice smooth engine i can also hear a nasty noise. it sounds like a tappet issue but a stethoscope proves the noise is a bottom end issue. I have a feeling it is from the pulse coil area as i have changed these in the past and they could be catching so thats my next job..........................
While i love and enjoy working on the old girl this is getting beyond the joke. one after another what ever is bloody next.

a stethoscope proves the noise is a bottom end issue. Dear Dr Ed Could it be the Oil Pump Chain? That is a little further "aft" of the Pulse Generator. I had one go quite noisy and there wasn't much to do, other than put up with it or replace and at £60 I was quoted for the chain, plus a gasket and all the time and aggro, I found the noise went away pretty quickly. Great news on the big improvement to the running. Was it just crap in the carbs (and as the blonde once said "how often do I need to do that?")

to be perfectly honest i have no idea which one area has made the difference, it is just so nice to have a smooth running engine again.
As to the oil pump chain that is a good call, it has been slack in the past when i changed the clutch that could be the cause. i shall investigate further at some stage. i am in no hurry as until this white stuff goes away the bike is staying in the shed nice and warm.............
cheers for that the Dr shall investigate as and when and let you know.
