Was beginning to feel the carbs needed a balancing, but I'd got rid of my Carbtune with my last 4 pot machine (was gonna be a single man for ever, y'know?). Quick trip to my local pet fish suppliers, 2 quid for a huge length of 6mm tubing, bit of old scrap timber, some staples and a glug of ATF and behold: A thing of beauty that showed my carbs to be about 6" out of balance - no I dunno what that means in mm of Hg, but who gives a wossname? Quick tweak of the screw and the tickover is much smoother, with the added bonus that she seems to pick up better. Would've road-tested but as I was putting the tools away we got an almighty clap of thunder followed by some intense rain - maybe tomorrow ..... I recommend the idea to the house. Yes, the eagle-eyed may have spotted my cache of NTV stickers - printed on magnetic paper so I can assault lone aNTy's without leaving a gummy residue (thoughtful, ain't I?).

Size apparently matters. When I first fired it up there was over 6" movement on each side! So yes, the size helped, if I'd made it smaller there would be a risk of overspill - nasty! Glad you are now officially balanced. Oh, the bike may well be but me ..... hardly! Top tip - if you're using a Heath-Robinson gadget like this, make sure that the tube to the right hand carb doesn't get too close to the exhaust downpipe .......

Hey Kirriepete, Top post ! I didn't know there was such a thing as "magnetic paper". Clever idea ! Have a look at my website for the way I balanced my carbs: www.stoeretassen.nl/My_NTV650/Carburateurs/Carburettors.htmAs for your heath-robinson contraption: sometimes people add 2 old jam-jars (1 on each side). This is a good idea, because if the difference in vacuum between the carbs is too much, there is a chance that the fluid will be sucked into the engine. And make sure that the jam-jars are the same size. GvS

Flippin' 'eck, there was me thinking I was ahead of the curve! Still, anything generated from first principles rather than copied counts as brilliance in my book! Now to figure out a way to link 2 of these together so I can do the lad's Bandit ..... hmmm, setup another with exactly the same level of fluid, throw a couple of t-pieces in between ...... I think the shed beckons!

No, don't do it; keep it simple Use cylinder no 1 as the reference, then: Balance 2 to 1, followed by 3 to 1 then 4 to 1 You could then do a check with all against 2, all against 3 and all against 4, but this is slightly OTT. Adding in Tee Pieces and trying to get everything level etc will drive you mad(der) ;D

err....might I say I didn't actually use this setup? I merely had heard of it and thought it was a good way of making your own.... Being lazy and all I bought a carbtune Works great and the Revere is running a lot better now then it ever did...mostly due to the fact the front valve clearance was way off. Keep that in mind: Always check the valves Before you synch the carbs....

Buzzin, you don't know the fun you missed - watching bright red ATF jiggling up and down is quite hypnotic ..... never mind the £50 you could've saved yourself. Plus I do believe that the differential manometer is more accurate than a Carbtune, given the relative lightness of the ATF a minor variation in pressure shows up as a big swing to the Lib-Dems (sorry, too much politics recently). Levels were spot-bollock on at all revs, none of your Carbtune plus or minus Xmm rubbish here!
Ride report - Wee Norman can now tickover steadily at 800rpm (but I set it at 1000 anyway), is a bit quicker on throttle response and pulls snatch-free from well below 2000 in any gear - haven't had the cojones to attempt a top gear roll on from tickover - yet!
PS - Balancing a Bandit with this rig - set 1+2, then 3+4 then balance the pairs with the tubes on 2+3 (the middle adjuster sets 2 carbs together). £55 for a Carbtune? I've been living in Scotland too long to spend my bawbees that freely! Y'ken?
