Auntie Joyce (my NTV 650p) appears to have died. Last week whilst going along a dual carriageway she suddenly died at about 60 - no backfiring no spluttering just nothing until I coasted to a stop. Same thing when I have tried to start her since - turns over fine but nothing else happens. My initial thought was something terminal in the ignition circuit. Had a look today and she seems to be sparking fine (but the plugs were completely dry) - however the fuel pump is not running. If I disconnect the pipes and go straight across the battery the pump will run - if I reconnect the pipes (still connected straight across the battery) the pump does not run. Strikes me that this is not right - anyone got any ideas? I've also measured the resistance of the fuel pump it's 2 ohms - does this sound right? Any ideas greatly appreciated - although I'm now recharging the battery as I've flattened it.

Firstly welcome to the site.
Auntie, sounds like a copy of mine mid last year.
I initially suspected the fuel pump and disconected it and connected the fuel tank feeding on gravity to the carbs. With a full tank ridden gently this works fine.
Apparently at higher speeds the engine heats up, so only good as a get you home or test measure.
To cut a long story short, my mechanic stripped the loomd and cleaned all the connestions which improved it. That said the cables from the starter had internally corroded but about £15 for a second hand loom section did the job.
If you are still having problems I will try to establish the exact section he replaced. been fine eversince.

Thanks Roger - I know that there are doubts about the wiring as I've had to renew some to get the indicators and lights working reliably. Also a previous owner has obviously had electrical problems as some of the connectors have been 'sealed' with vasoline or similar. I had every intention of renewing the wiring loom when I first bought the bike (last April) but I've been enjoying riding the old girl so much I haven't wanted to take her off the road. I'll try the gravity feed approach first to see if I can get it running and proove the fault to the fuel supply, (the tank is almost down to reserve) and take it from there. I've yet to find the fuel cutoff relay. I suspect that it is one of the relays mounted mid frame between the side panels, which I'm struggling to get to ; or am I just being thick/blind?
Regards
Mick

I know the feeling I only have one bike as well and I am close to the limit of my lack of skill. ;D
Anybody else help please.

Eh...Just a few things to try: Remove the fuel filter, see what happens (could be blocked) Try with different hoses attached and a bowl of petrol....see if it pumps petrol at all. another key one: Try openeing the petrol tap on the tank and see what comes out if anything at all. Also, check it the tank hasn't been forming a vacuum by opening the fuel cap and trying again.
The fuelpump on the NTV only works when there is a spark going to the plugs, or so I am told, so perhaps something wrong in that area (the wiring that is) Also, this makes me think there is no fuelcut-off relay.....as the pump would stop anyway if the ignition is off (no chance of fuel being pumped while engine not running)

Thanks for your suggestions,I've got a good gravity feed on the outlet of the fuel filter so everything looks OK there. I've had a good old run through the wiring diagram, unplugging and testing and then putting it all back together again and found no faults - the really good/bad news is she is now running fine and the pump is running fine. Not really confidence inspiring though. My very last check is going to be the wiring to and from the fuel pump relay (it gets it's live via the handlebar switches and it's earth from the ignition control unit) and if I can't find any damaged wiring or corroded contacts I'll be putting it all back together again and hoping it was just a duff contact between one of the many plug/socket connections. As I've got a spare fuse position I'm also going to run a live feed and an earth direct to the fuel pump leaving it unfused - should I have a problem again I've just got to unplug the connector and put a fuse in to eliminate all the 'normal' supply wiring. I've enlarged the 'Haynes' wiring diagram to A3 size and I've got a couple of spare copies. If anyone else is having electrical problems and want's a copy let me know and I'll pop one in the post.

Good to here she is running.
If this help please message is closed? I will move this out into the technical main area to keep this free for urgent support?
We can always move it back if we need to in the future?
