Finally got everything sorted (well, almost) and when I looked at the exhaust from the other side I realized what had changed the sound....it's rusted through at the mounting point 
Seeing as I really do like the stubby exhaust and it's currently not making much noise I am in no hurry.
But if someone happens to have a good stubby exhaust, or a replacement that is as short and silent I would be interested
