I have seen a lot of discussion on oil in the past (not just here), but it comes down to this: make up your own mind I still prefer using slightly more expensive purpose made bike oil. Car oil is out (due to the difference in clutch), diesel oil I have heard more often but I won't try it. As for what type of bike oil? Well I just use normal Castrol of ELF 10w40 semi synthetic oil (full synth is bloody expensive and mineral is never in stock around here) Make sure it's 4 stroke oil and not 2 stroke... But that's just my opinion...

As Buzzin says there are as many opinions as there are types of oil. I think there are two absolute "must do" to consider: - Use motorcycle specific oil, which has been designed for use with a wet clutch
- Change oil and filter on a regular basis
You can then consider synthetic, semi synthetic or mineral oil Personally, I think Semi Synth is the way to go. I found fully synth potentially caused heavier clutch and gear changes. You can pay an awful lot for brand names, or use cheaper oils. Many people think that it all comes from the same refineries anyway, so you might as well pay less for it. Most people know I'm a big fan of Hein Gericke and for the last few oil changes on my mighty Pan, I've used their own brand semi synth oil which costs me £14 for 4litres www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/products_id/6455This is a one litre bottle for £3.99 With an oil and filter change, you will need 2.6litres

thanks for the info and links guys, the reason i had asked was that id heard a few stories about semi and full synthetic oils making the clutch play up on older bikes as Mc F says, one of the local bike shops has a good deal on motul oil at the moment so ill give it a try.

hi,
I have run all my bikes be it new or old on castrol 5 - 40w 4 stroke semi synthetic oil.
oil and filter change every 4000 miles religously without fail, and i have never had any problems with engine wear or clutch problems.
