Hi all,
Not something needed immediately but someone will know this for sure. In my quest for wing rack fittings I have been doing some lateral thinking.
I have found a Revere with a genuine Honda rear rack and pannier frames. It is from a breakers, not expensive. First question, will it fit my 95 bike? It looks identical but I am not sure about the fitting over the pillion grab handle. The bike it is coming off is advertised as a 97 Revere 650, very strange, import?
Next question, would those frames fit the Hepco and Becker panniers? Or, of course genuine Honda ones, are the attachments identical?
These are on ebay at the moment, look nice, 180454523737 is the item number, about the right era.
All of this is an alternative to fitting the wingrack. This would still be my preferred option as there are lots around second hand.
The top box is not a problem for the honda rack I don't think as I could rig up a plate for a givi box somehow.
Thanks
Rod

The rack mounting points on a Revere and NTV are identical so don't worry about that. Some people don't know the name change occurred so they will call it a NTV 650 Revere. Technically that name is correct for mainland versions from 93 and before...After that the name Revere was dropped. I shouldn't worry about that, just someone that doesn't know it all I can't be 100% sure, but I thought the Honda panniers were H&B cases...so I would think the fittings are the same. But searching the internet will tell you this methinks. With smaller topboxes from Givi a mounting plate is provided. For the bigger range you need to buy one seperate. Keep in mind: Kappa = Givi cheap brand (it's the same company), so when getting the plate look for the Kappa ones as they are cheaper, but otherwise identical.

Hi, thanks for your informed response.
I have done the deed and bought the rack. It has arrived and I have straightened out one of the indicators and the mounting bracket. Other than showing its age it's a really good piece of kit. No problem with the mounting points as you say. I have not actually fitted it yet, too cold in the garage.
It has the locking fittings on the rear of the frame for the H & P type panniers so I am 99% sure they are the ones. I have searched the other forum and there is a post which seems to confirm that H & P maufactured the luggage frame and rack that Honda offered as an optional extra.
I have the givi monokey mounting plate from the wingrack. My new rack stamped with the Honda logo is simply a detachable hard nylon/plastic plate. I should be able to fix something up depending on the top box I am able to buy.
Will let you know what happens. If I could add pics easily I would.
Nice touch on this Honda rack is a pull out handle to lift the bike onto the centre stand once the panniers are attached as the grab rails are difficult to grasp.

Hi, very good pictures of loaded up ntvs and assorted others. I noticed one bike appears to have the same frames for panniers that I have bought but using the genuine honda panniers. I am interested to see that the right hand one looks like it may have some kind of heat protection under the pannier. This interests me because I have found a problem.
When I have the offside frame in place the long silencer on my 95 modle just looks to interfere with the shell of the pannier. I am going to have to modify the exhaust mounting to gain three or four centimetres or the silencer will foul the pannier. I wonder if honda continued to offer the luggage as an option once the later models came in. The heat shield would probably be necessary. I am going to look at some panniers and top box this weekend and still intend to buy them if they are ok.
Does anyone have experience of fitting the h & p frames and panniers to the later model with the longer silencer rather than the stubby one.
Any help as always appreciated. This is taking a lot longer to sort out than I thought. People want a lot of money for stuff as well!

Hi Rodh that is going to be tricky to overcome I think.
If you have got any fouling between silencer and pannier and are keeping the silencer, you options are probably:
Angle the silencer closer to the horizontal - this will bring the back of the silencer down and hopefully clear the pannier.
Shift the pannier up - probably very difficult
Shift the whole pannier further outboard - might be easier to achieve. Probably look unbalanced from the rear
Shift the bottom of the pannier outboard - probably easy to do if you bend the frame and make a bracket from the silencer mounting / Footpeg to keep it away from the silencer - would look daft from behind.
Or finally - a mixture of small amounts of the above.

Not sure if this will help, but when I had throw overs on for trip to Spain ther worked there way !very! close to exhaust but had no prob with them melting, Have a few centmeters of air flow seems no prob, as exhaust at that point dont get to hot as long as bike is moveing.
Spent 4 half hours stuck in traffic in Paris with no prob, but a bit of heat profing should do the job.
Just my 2 pences worth.

Thanks for all the thoughts above.
I am going to see/buy the panniers on Saturday and a top box from H & P which is with them. That is a separate problem but not a difficult one. I can soon fix something up to attach the mounting plate to the honda rack, if there is a bit of flex I am thinking about an extra strut or strap of some sort to add a bit more rigidity. I don't foresee much to worry about there though.
Re the right hand pannier: I think the combination of small adjustments may well be the answer. I have loosened the silencer/collector box mounting bolts and I think with a little enlarging of the holes coupled with some flexibility at the clamps to the exhaust pipes, I should be able to get the silencer 3 or 4 cm lower, ie. closer to the horizontal. I was also thinking along the same lines for the pannier frame mountings and a little bending should bring the top tube closer to the bike frame and the lower tube a little further out. With the pannier in position that should give the pannier a dihedral effect (sorry, it will stick up a bit) and help the clearance over the silencer.
To change the exhaust would cost me more than the whole of the panniers and frames and it is in excellent condition so not really an option. I don't want to have the panners on for everday use so I am hopeful that I can find a workable solution.
Thanks for the reassurance about the heat effect. If I get the clearance then a wait and see and keep an eye on it approach sounds fine.
I will know how things work out if I have time to get working on the bike next week. We are visiting family this weekend and making a trip to look at/buy panniers and top box on the way to London.
Thanks again for all your interest and suggestions.

Hi everyone,
I am pleased to report a great success in getting my luggage all fitted.
I removed the silencer and collector box and filed out the mounting holes. I took about 2mm from the collector box and maybe 3/4mm from the silencer where it mounts against the foot peg hanger. The effect has been to drop the end of the silencer about a further 20+mm. This has given me the extra reassuring clearance from the right hand pannier that I wanted. There appears to be no additional strain on the clamps to the pipes or the clamps into the exhaust ports.
The total effect on the bike is most satisfying and I am now ready (almost) for Europe. Just a few more bits and pieces. I am very impressed with the quality of the Hepco and Becker panniers and top box. The Honda frames are a good fit with no further mods needed.
When I get sorted with pics I will put some on and wait for your opinions.

Hi all, At last I have got to grips with the photos I reported success with the luggage fitment. More than success really: I am delighted. It has turned my bike into what I wanted all along. Not everyones cup of tea I know but many NTV owners seem to appreciate this touring type of arrangement. It was one of main reasons for buying. I have only to splash out on the powerbronze flip type screen to be almost ready for anything. If anyone is needing luggage advice I would say try and find some of the Hepco and Becker/Honda original frames. They are a precise fit and a neat and practical solution. It's difficult if you already have the Givi kit, eg. panniers and box. Then you may be forced financially down the wingrack route. Que sera. Now the best bit: [ ;D

Glad you managed to sort out your luggage arrangements-I too had difficulty in staying away from the wingrack option as I already had Kappa panniers however with a great deal of international "surfing" I managed to locate this brand unkown tailor made set up and am well chuffed with the outcome. If anyone does know who made these frames I`d be interested for future reference. Regards,Mick.

I'm pretty sure both kappa/givi made tubular frames for monolock as well, I'm just not sure if you'll be able to find any for the NTV.... also....be aware, if it's made by rentec....stay away from it

I think the point about number plates is well made. At the moment my edit tool on flickr doesn't let me blank them out so I have taken out the pics temporarily. Rod
