The owners manual of my NTV650 states that I have to renew the engine oil & oil filter every 12.000 km. This seems like a bit long to me. On a different dutch forum I've also read that this is a mistake in the manual: I should change the oil every 6000 km and the filter every 12000 km. Any comment please Franklin

Hi franklin Remember talking to Hovis and Lee at the last NTV meet up and they reckoned that the secret to the longevity of the NTV was the oil changes Apparently Change the Oil and filter at the same time and the bike will last indefinitely. Sure others will kick in with their ideas...

Regular oil changes are always a good idea, for any engine, not just the NTV. The Honda manual says 8k (miles) for oil & filter changes. I go by that, because with the mileage I do it's getting changed at least 3 or 4 times a year anyway, and the engine is always fully 'warmed' twice a day.
If you do a lower mileage and / or a lot of stop/start riding I'd recommend halving the oil / filter change interval, or twice a year, whichever comes sooner.

Handbook (electronic copy) does say 12,000 km (8,000 m) to replace oil and filter. Regret Haynes is at home so I can't say their advice.
It does seem a little long and I doubt anyone could convince me a problem is caused by changing oil (and filter) more frequently.
There's a huge debate about quality (and therefore cost) of oil, especially if it's changed more regularly. The other debate is fully, semi synthetic or mineral. Because modern bike engines run with a wet clutch it's very important to choose a compatible oil.
I have fitted magnetic sump plugs and been reading quite a bit about magnets in the filtration process. You can buy magentic inserts for the filter, filters with magnets in them (Hein Gericke £8.99) and a novel magnetic shield to fit over the filter (HG = £8.99). The idea is that paper filters can only deal with metallic particles down to a certain size, the magnets act after the oil has been through the filter and captures the smallest particles (which can often cause the worst damage). Magnetic sump plugs usually catch the bigger bits before the oil goes into the pump.
I'm with Jazz - perhaps not "indefinetely", but regular oil and filter changes will give your bike longer life. I'd say at most 6,000 Km / 4,000 miles, but your riding habits are also important. Lots of short cold start journeys are bad Longer, warmed up journeys (at sensible speeds!) are better Time is another enemy as it can lose performance if left in the engine for too long. If you only do 1,000 miles (1,600Km) per year, I'd recommend changing the oil once per year rather than waiting 4 years to get the miles in.
Oil does a lot of things in addition to lubricate - it cleans (and therefore needs to be filtered), cools and protects - it's the life blood of your engine so look after it.

Just to confirm Haynes manual does state: 8000 miles (1200 Kms) Change Engine Oil AND Oil Filter AND Spark Plugs. Air Filter gets changed every 12,000 miles (18,000 Kms). Thinks these must be advisable as i am sure i have changed stuff more often than that. My mileage since dec 06 has been about 4/5 thousand P.A... And i have changed Oil and filter once a year. plugs a couple of times and the air filter once

Hey hey! Just to confirm Haynes manual does state: 8000 miles (1200 Kms) Change Engine Oil AND Oil Filter AND Spark Plugs. Air Filter gets changed every 12,000 miles (18,000 Kms). 8000 miles = 12.000 Kms.. not 1200 .. 0 mistake typing im sure. Still I change the oil and filter (they are so cheap!!) every time at 5.000km (3000 miles) SHARP. Thats for any bike I own.. oil is theyr blood! Spark plugs = That depends.. I usually take the ones on the sides and check how is the mix and how they are burning. Usually once/twice a year. I'm using Denso platinum ones now and they are really great!!! (model: X24EPR-ZU9) Air Filter: Twice a year. And here u go! Regards
