on hubs bike the temp gauge is playing tricks
the gauge is jumping from cold to hot but generally shows cold when the fan comes on
ive checked the gauge & that seems to be working fine
could it be the sender thingy on the thermo housing or a wiring problem
any ideas would be a great help

A common theme it looks like! illegal recently posted Sounds like your system needs a good flush because of years of rust build up from the radiator and steel pipes ect, i'd take off the impellor case front (not the back part) and put a garden hose into the thermostat cap hole, run some water through it till it gets clean, replace the cap and then i'd take off the hose from the front cylinder (front of the engine) and do the same, this will clean it all out and possibly remove any bad build up's, then do the same to the resevoir's container, then refit all bits and fill with water and test, I done this on one of my NTV's and it improved the running temp but i also removed the 2 sensors and cleaned them with emery cloth.. it ran perfect after a good flush. in this thread www.ntvhonda.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=enginecooling&action=display&thread=730Personally, I'd use fine wire wool rather than emery, but each to their own! The sender units work by earthing the current going through the gauge (or fan) the hotter the sender gets, the less resistance in it, the more current flows through to earth. The gauge shows hotter, or the fan kicks in. Likewise, if the sender has a poor earth, it will not work properly. Let's hope that is all it is. Presume you tested the gauge by earthing and removing earth to see if the extremes worked.

i agree with McF, if the earth is dodgy i've seen a temp guage read like you explained, the thermostat housing earths onto the bolt for the air filter, my cure was to run a bridge wire across to the thermo housing because it's mount was broken off, but i think your fix might be just to make sure you have a good earth there and take the sensor out and five it a clean with wire wool or fine emery...

Presume you removed it for a clean? What condition did it look to be in?
The bracket is not going to be a problem, especially if you have jury rigged an earth for the sender.
