Most of you lot will probably never have heard of this. But today (apr. 30) we celebrate our queens (Beatrix) birthday. All sort of festivities take place today.
It's not actually her birthday today; it used to be her mothers birtday (Juliana). But our current queens birthday is somewhere in the winter. So when she came to the throne, she (wisely) decided to keep the date of the celebrations the same. So that we would have a decent chance of good weather.
Which it is today: about 19°, no rain predicted & some sunshine.
So, to the rest of the world: have a nice day at work. We're going to party today ! ;D

The party has had a nasty turn.......
It's common on 'koninginnedag' to put out our national flag with an orange ribbon attached (the royal family is the 'house of orange'). But right now, on all the houses in our street, the ribbon is gone and the flags are at half-mast.
Holland is mourning the 4 people killed and many more injured because some idiot tried to ram his car into the bus of the royal family.
I don't know what to say.........

There is nothing that you can say I'm afraid I didn't know about this tragedy until quickly popping in to see new posts; had a quick look at the BBC news and it's an outrage. I've heard many stories about how relaxed the NL Royal family are and often wish our Royals could enjoy similar freedoms. According to the BBC Page I saw news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8026807.stm there is no sign of a motive yet, but they have no strong suspicion of terrorism. Possibly some deranged individual, but to act like this, I'd invite them to have another go, but this time to just ram their car at high speed into a large solid object. What a terrible thing to happen on a joyous occassion. Sympathies to all who have been affected.

franklin.........so sorry. Saw this in the papers on the way home, very sad. Tried to imagine how we would feel if this happened in the mall to a crowd cheering our queen. Can't say more, kind thoughts to all those affected.

I didn't find out till late in the day, just didn't have the telly on. Like some of the people said, it's a terror attack in such a way that not only did the man kill 5 people and seriously injure a lot more, but he also took the innocence out of the day and the people there. The man stated it was a deliberate act that he had planned for, before being declared brain-dead (although doubt can be had if that is an appropriate term) I haven't heard from my family yet, but I guess my dad would have let me know if they would have been hurt (they live in the place where it happened)
My thoughts are with the people killed and hurt today (technically yesterday) and I hope they and their families can recover. I don't get emotionally often, but this really had me swearing at the tv for a while...

The man who did this has died last night, due to his injuries. Also one of the other critically injured people has dies last night, making a total of 6 dead people.
Now we will never know exactly what his motive was to do this. But he had lost his job and was going to be evicted from his house today. So ít's not very difficult to guess.
Among the injured are three children.
One member of the police and another of the dutch military police (marechaussee) were also among the victims. But I don't know if they were killed or injured.
If you're going to kill yourself (but I sincerely hope that you don't have this intention !) ; do the decent thing and jump off a bridge or take a few sleeping pills to many. But don't involve a lot of other people, who actually enjoy life !

The member of the military police has died as well; making a total of 7 deaths. And there is also still one person in hospital who is in the 'danger zone'.
