Unless you are lucky and have an obvious split collett on the top of your shock to hold the spring on, you will not be able to strip it down yourself.
If you do have a split collett, you will need some spring compressors to compress the spring A sharp tap with a Manchester Screwdriver (hammer) will loosen the colletts, then remove them spring will slide off the top of the shock and you can have a beautiful powder coated finish Reassembly is straightforward reversal of the above
Alternative is to get the shock off the bike, and apply smootherite in your chosen colour using a modelling brush - it takes a while - I should know, I had to do this on my mighty Pan

I just took my spring off for a general pimping; You need to compress the springs somehow. My car ones were too big so I got these two from fleabay. (shown just positioned on my spare shock) Wind the pre-load up to the max and compress the srpring as much as possible. Then undo the preload and push the adjuster down a bit. It only needs to go down 5mm max and you may have to push it round a bit if it's behind the hose connection This pis shows the clip holding the adjuster - just pop it off. Slide the adjuster off and the spring and job done
