Hi there,
Just mildly concerned about the amount of oil that seems to reach the airbox and then run out on to the engine. The oil is now below the upper limit of the dipstick, roughly 50%, and when i went out this morning there was oil on the crank case again, coming from the same spot. I know this isnt necessarily bad but was wondering if theres anything I can do to stop wasting oil like this?
Is there any fault in the breather routing or anything that could cause the oil to be forced into the airbox? like a blockage somewhere or something?
Also, when checking the dipstick after a ride, the oil seems to be extremely thin, almost watery, more so than before.

are we sure the oil is coming from the Airfilter box? I would really encourage you to check this and identify where the oil is dripping from. It sounds as though it could be the Airfilter box though.
The oil will appear to be a different consistency when it's hot. I presume it's multigrade you are using? Hopefully "yes" in which case the oil should get thicker as it heats up.
If you're using a lot of oil the main three reasons could be:
Oil leak - check under the bike for drips or puddles, especially after a ride
Worn pistons, rings and cylinders. Other symptoms would include loss of power and excessive smoking
Over pressure in the crankcase possibly caused by a blown head gasket. Depending on where/how the gasket has blown you could be getting oil in the cooling system and/or water in the oil. Compression values would be low and I'm afraid this is where I think your problem could lie

Seems to have settled down now, oil level is constant at 50% on the dipstick, no new drips anywhere and the oil was definately coming from the airbox, took the airbox off and apart and it had a large puddle of oil which was definately where the drip was from.
Bike doesn't smoke, not down on power, i think it's fine and I was just worrying too much.
The only other thing I did was take the plug out of the breather tube down by the LH foot peg which had gathered a little clump of gunge since the last time I did it.

Errrrrrr......NO!
All oils get thinner when heated...A multigrade oil is clever because it acts like a thin oil when cold (ie very runny) and like a thick oil when hot (runnier, but not as runny as a thin oil would be....)
It is definitely runnier when hot, just not massively so....

Yeah that sounds right to me, when cold the oil looks absolutely fine. Sorry folks, nothing wrong by the looks of it!
