After what feels like a very long time (4 days...) the bike is back together, Rebuilt the forks, had a lot of trouble with the left fork (as you face the bike) and it took a lot of brute force to get it apart, but it seems oil tight so far which is good news! It was a daunting job but I feel quite confident with it if I were to do it again so if anyone ever needs a hand with their forks I'd be happy to help. While I was waiting for bushes to arrive after discovering how knackered they were I stripped down the rear end to find an alarming amount of rust so I stripped it all back, wire brushed and wire wooled most of the rust away and painted a few layers of hammerite silver. Not pretty, but I am confident it will preserve the frame for a few years, maybe I'll strip it and have it powder coated sometime down the line but for now I just need to use it but keep the rust away. I also replaced a very very broken front brake line with a gorgeous new HEL line. I can thoroughly recommend HEL lines on the NTV, it was cheap, arrived quickly, looks fantastic and has made no end of improvements to braking and feel already, and it needs another bleed after it settles down anyway. Bike is now all back together with fork gaiters and also the great Renntec rack (thanks Groovylee! It's awesome!) Starting to think it looks pretty presentable. It's a great bike, really enjoying it. NTVs are workhorses, they're rarely seen spotless once they left the showroom.
The silver hammerite is what I've used on two NTVs frames, it protects them so well that even if the metal inside rusts away it'll still look solid.
I kinda like the idea of replacing my brake lines to get rid of the "squidgy" feel of the brakes.

Indeed, and I don't want mine to look showroom!! But I am dead happy with how it sits at the moment, I think its 'tidy' mechanically which is what I like and it rides absolutely spot on.
My front line was a necessary replacement, the original was frayed and leaking lots. This line feels significantly better although I need to do a lot more miles on it and give it another bleed before I know exactly what its like. Definately better though!

Thanks again man! Really like the rack, finishes the bike off nicely actually, and the lines fit the subframe really nicely! Dead happy, and the finish is fine Just a few tips that might help others: Keep the old seals and bushes, they help to ram the new parts in, in a way that spreads the pressure evenly so reduces risk of damage. Also, the hand shields I've got are MZ parts from here: www.meinzweirad.de/MZ-Ersatzteile/Lenker-Anbauteile/Anbauteile/Protektoren-schwarz-2-Stk-MZ-ETZ-Handschuetzer::397.htmlThey fit well with only a small modification, a bit of cutting on the left handside - just a small cutout for the mirror stem, and then a zip tie on the right hand side to stop the wind blowing it into the brake lever but I think it works well and they're dirt cheap, keeps most of the wind off. and finally, don't loose your tank rubbers
