not sure if iam in the right topic
went a 160 mile round trip on my new 1998 NTV 650 and on the way back home (15 miles away) i pulled over for a cig and noticed the shaft had leaked oil all over my tyre , rim and break disk . the oil seemed to be coming from the top of the shaft (think it may be the oil filler hole)
was just wondering if anyone knows what the cause is and how to fix

hi mate,
the plug in the top of the diff is purely a breather. it has no other function,
You fill through the large plug on the side of the diff, until oil starts to come out, that is the level indicator aswell. if someone has filled through the top breather and filled it right to the top then there is way to much oil in there and as it spins it shall come out.
You are best to empty all the oil out the drain plug at the bottom and then refill through the large plug in the side.
A Little bit of advise though these plugs can be right pain in the arses. they are very weak and if they have been overtightened in the past then it may shear. its nots the end of the world you can get a new one from david silvers or a good breakers.
Try slacken the filler plug first before you empty the oil, just to make sure its free. BUT dont remove completly, if it as full as i think it may be then oil will piss everywhere when removed.
hope that helps ed

Smartie has pretty much covered it, but a few additional thoughts The shaft runs dry; what you have described is the final drive unit
as Smartie says, if the oil is coming out of the top of the drive housing, it got way too much oil in and no wonder it's coming out.
Those filler caps are very delicate; I've sheared two in my time. They are made of metal, but be very careful
It's an excellent suggestion to drain the existing oil and refill to the correct level
I should add that if the oil has gone onto your disk and got on the pads, you should replace the pads and give the disk a good degreasing clean
