2002 Yamaha T-max 500 "twist and go" scooter in Black and grey.
Taxed to end Oct.'10, MoT 1 Nov.'10 30,000 miles, backrests and top-box, offers over £1,500.-
This "Maxi-Scooter" has been a godsend while I was recovering from a hip replacement, but now that I no longer need a fast scooter, I'm using an NTV650, so the Tmax is for sale. New tyres a few weeks back, just before that , new pads and a service (done by me, oil, filters, belt-check). There is an extra-long screen, a neat, home-made rider back-rest, and a cheap but effective lock-on QD single-helmet top-box. There is also a Yamaha factory-made pillion back-rest which can be fitted to the standard Yamaha grab-rail. The belt-inspection showed less than 1/2 mm wear and no cracking, neither is there any uneven wear on the edges of the belt. I have added a thin extra layer of foam under the front central area of the seat to stop me sliding forward on long trips. The brake-fluid in both master-cylinders was replaced immediately I got it, and again this year, a habitual precaution of mine. I have added a shrouded lead and connector to the battery for trickle-charging, as I sometimes don't ride for up to a month.
I have an old-timers' habit of putting a drop of oil down the tail-pipe just as I garage the bike after use, about once every two weeks. This may help account for the good condition of the standard original exhaust and silencer. I have never dropped or dinged it, and I am confident the original owner did not either, as I know it's history unusually well. Three owners comprise the original owner who bought it new, GT Motorcycles at St. Austell in Cornwall, who had it in the back of their big-bike showroom for quite a while, before I spotted it and bought it on 18 10 2007.
Of all the Maxi-scooters, it is the most like a motorcycle in terms of road-holding and handling. The Tmax has a full set of two triple-clamps holding the fork stanchions, just like a motorcycle, and a good stiff frame. The engine is fixed in the frame, and there is only the rear wheel and final-drive belt on the proper motorcycle-style swinging-arm. There is a large under-seat space which can take my helmet and jacket and gloves, if carefully packed. The extra-tall screen provides great shelter from the slip-stream, yet I can look through an area of near-still air just behind the screen. I have made and fitted a bolt-on polycarbonate tax-disc-holder low on the centre of the screen which protects the tax-disc from weathering and theft.
Frankly, this machine is not suitable for those with very short legs, as the foot-boards do not have cutaways like those on the Suzuki Burgman, and thus would be a bit of a stretch at a standstill. (I am 5ft. 11inches tall, so not a problem) Fuel consumption for me has averaged 45-60mpg, depending on throttle opening used. The Tmax will cruise easily on motorways, and still have a reserve of speed. The present MoT expires on November 1st. 2010, and the tax at the end of October 2010. If a buyer wishes, I will put it through the MoT and ensure there is a full 12 months available. It may be a geriatric express, but a lot of discerning couriers and distance-riders use them to great effect. This model is the carburettor version with one front disc. I believe the injection version was introduced two years later. The body work is good.
It lives in a garage which is heated in winter and in any wet spells in summer. The only corrosion is a surface browning of the exhaust downpipes. The black enamel on the wheels is sound, and the fork stanchions are good. I cleaned and repainted the rear brake caliper the week I got it. I clean and polish this bike several times a year, but I am not a sparkle fetishist. The only time I gave it any degree of "beans" was on a Police Safety track experience at Castle Combe. I am a pensioner, with one new hip already. My track speed was moderated by knowing how long a broken bone would take to heal, and how much it would hurt. I was .... cautious.
The price guides suggest around £2000 for this model-year, at est. 10,000 miles on the clock. This one has done 30,000 miles. I put it on eBay at £1,750.- reserve. No bids. Make me an offer?
