Intresting one this, and would like your collective thoughts as Im about to start chucking money at the bike! In recent weeks I have been unable to start the bike in any gear. Its usual for me to just flick the kill switch and leave the bike in gear when at petrol station or in the garage. Its a habit I got into when parking outside the house on the road which had a nasty camber and it was on a hill. I usually jump on bike, ignition on, pull clutch in, swing stand up and start the bike. Recently, I have had to be in neutral, and neutral only to start the bike. If it was in gear and the stand up, it would not even turn the starter motor. Select neutral, and no problems! This morning, the bike would not start at all. Lights, horn working, battery good and kill switch on. I flicked the kill switch on/off rapidly and I finally had power to the starter motor and the bike started normally. Dodgy switch or sensor or both? Help appreciated

Its the side stand switch, no if's, but's or maybe's. If you have everything else it has to be.

WS i had a similar problem couldn't start in gear (I too just stopped bike in gear, got off..and then started it with clutch in, the next morning ) Once or twice it refused to start in gear but would in neutral, did check out wires to left of bars (By clutch) and found the wire leading up and into the handlebar swtchgear was loose. A little squeeze with some pliers made the connectors fit better..problem stopped after that... ;D Not sure it ever stopped all the electrics, but it may help..other wise it's the side stand switch.... Hth

Had a chance to look into this a bit more this evening. Jaz was spot on, a bit of tinkering with the connection had it working again. I think the connection was more rust then metal to metal! Its clean up nice and I have tightened the spade connector. I can now start the bike in any gear with the clutch in However, the kill switch is a little more picky, I think it will need replacing as soetimes it works, and sometimes i have to flick it several times until it works! Thanks for responses peeps

I thought I had a similar problem....so I replaced the entire clutchlevermounting (well...the old one was worn out anyway) Wasn't all that expensive at wemoto. Turns out nothing was wrong....the sensor only matter when trying to start in gear (which I never do) Interesting to know: The Revere will start with clutch in and/or in neutral and side stand out, the V-strom refuses this. Sidestand must be up, no matter if it's in neutral or clutch in... (very annoying finding that out....I checked and double checked..... )
