I'm new to your forum so hello all. Anyway I'm fishing for possible answers to a problem that has recently developed on my 1992 650NTV. It has some characteristic noises but is a great reliable bike for it's age and has never let me down. Recently though I get a characteristic sharp crack noise when decelerating in first (only happens in this gear and no other). It is sporadic sometimes occurring when I let out the clutch whilst changing into first to slow down. Sometimes the noise occurs if I accelerate in first and then slow down without changing gear. It seems totally random but only happens in first. No other symptoms are present (e.g. it doesn't jump out of gear). I've had a mechanic test ride it and he said he didn't hear anything particularly worrying but I don't know if the problem occurred in his test ride. Could it be gear-lash? Any thoughts would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

Hi,
i dont know if you are able to record the sound ( using a go pro or phone taped to the back of the bike ) people here should be able to tell you.. but.... would under normal riding conditions should you really use 1st gear to slow the bike down... you would not do this in a car so seems to you should not do this on a bike either )
have never done this on any offroad bike either.... as 1st gear should only really be used for pulling away from standing start.. ( why Neutral is between second and first )
