This is an old thread but I thought that my experiences might be helpful.
Drive shaft chatter? Most audible on very light load in a highish gear. Does it disappear if you change down? There was a noise like this on my previous '94 and my current '95 650 which never got any worse. The engine will pull fine at low revs but the drive shaft can resonate if you are not smooth with the clutch and throttle. The answer is usually a lower gear. Also at low speed going downhill on the over run or light load you can get noises. As far as I know there is no shock absorber in the drive train which is why you get these noises. Unless you get alarmingly loud harsh noises there is probably nothing to worry about. The transmission is pretty tough.
My last NTV was still going strong at 65,000 miles when I sold it to a guy who rode it away and my current one is doing fine at 46,00. The clutch also tends to make chittering sounds when pulled in and I have never had problems in that department either.
Something to be aware of when changing rear drive shaft oil -make sure you can get the filler plug out before you undo the drain plug! For obvious reasons.
