Hi < I think I could do with a bit of advice ,I am getting a noise on the left hand side of my bike , it seems to be related to the driveshaft or gear box . The bike changes gear great no problems the clutch operates good too. When I pull in the clutch whilst riding the noise disappears this is why I think its related to the driveshaft possibly at the engine area. Has anyone had this problem ? and what is the cheapest options to repair it . Thank you Gary ...Burnley , ENGLAND

Hi Gary,
What does the oil look like? (Ever changed it ?) Removed the plug at the bottom (the oil will come out, so have new oil ready) & inspect it for metal parts (there is a magnet inside the plug, which should collect metal parts).

Does it make the noise when you rotate the rear wheel by hand? (bike on centre stand). Try to move the rear wheel, just to eliminate any wear on the rear wheel bearing.

Hi,
I suspect it going to be something in either the clutch side or the gearbox side... you say the sound goes away when you are moving along but the clutch is in.. you look at what happens when yo pull the clutch in .. the engine and clutch are still turning and the engine and gear box are still turning ( but the engine and gearbox are no longer connected ) when you let the clutch out you hear the rattling sound.
i know is may sound like it coming form the back but noise will travel through the frame and components.. i suspect it's something like the clutch thrust bearing or something like that ( or even the clutch basket ) you may have too much slack on the clutch cable.
just my 2 pence worth of advice

You sure it's not normal gearbox noises of the 4 or 6 bearings?
Have you been able to compare to another similar machine?

Thanks for the input guys , the noise does come from the left side back of the engine and I can hear it quite clearly when I have the bike on the centre stand and roll wheel back and forth while in gear , I will be stripping it next week as I now have a loan of another bike to get about on . Will let you all know how it goes thanks again Gary. Please god let it be simple and cheap I love this bike lol

Did you fixed it?? I've got a similar noice on my bike. Comes on enginebraking and sometimes when just cruising. To me it sound like a broken tooth being tumbled around in there.... 😨

I have the same problem with my 96 650. Rolling off it clacks away particularly at low speed. Might be higher speeds too but with wind noise it’s hard to tell. 2/3 gear particularly. When u accelerate it goes away, or put pressure on the drive. Goes away when clutch is pulled.

I have the same problem, 97 NTV rolling off at slow speed you can hear a clacking but pull the clutch it goes. Not sure how with those symtoms it can be a wheel bearing. It does sound very metalic.

Same here. Best audible at around 2500 rpm in 3rd and 4th gear. It's only when there is no acceleration or engine braking going on. When the clutch is pulled, it goed away. I suspect cam chain flutter, because of worn tensioners. But it's a guess.

Might also be the shaft drive, but there is very little slack in the drive train when i put it on a center stand. No excessive wear or metal flakes in the end transmission oil either. It's also more of a rattle than a clunking sound. That's why i sustect the cam chain. The engine is otherwise in excellent condition, with 50000km on the clock.

might be the cam chain. no sound when idle though, really only hear it at low speed coasting. Clutch on no sound accellerating no sound. weird but it does not seem uncommon. just hope it does no go back when riding and damage the engine.
