Do other people have great difficulty fitting a replacement onto old pipes. Old Motad silencer broke... bought a replacement but couldn't get it on all the way up the pipes despite lots of tapping, heating etc.... nothing would work. In the end, got it on as far as I could, had to modify the rear bracket, clamped it up and all runs fine with no leaks. Perhaps its necessary to loosen the downpipes but I was a bit wary of this in case the front studs sheared off as very rusty.

sanding the downpipes then applying grease seems to work. Old exhaust sealant will leave the surface of downpipes uneven and raised which may make fitting difficult. dont loosen downpipes!

loosening the front pipes makes it much easier- and also cleaning the surface of the old pipes as above will help
with the previous silencer having been on years- it makes things much easier
would be useful to get the Fab number of your old silencer to see how old it is- the average is a little over 8 years with the new stainless probably doubling that and more
you can get me on ianmcdonald@motad.co.uk

My solution involved spending pocket change at B&Q for a rubber doorstop - see the following post: Centre stand fitment with a Moturd 'zorstOther solutions are available, terms and conditions apply, see website for details.
