Hello! Somehow I could not find anything by using search. Last autumn my girlfriend drove home her NTV 650 1993. with strange loud noise, which, as she said, appeared suddenly. I think this noise comes from first cylinder, but I'm not so sure My friend, who drives transalp for ten years, said, that timing chain tensioner is weak point and I have to start with it, but somehow in service manual they look different Question is: Am I measuring tensioner wear (max 6mm) correctly? How to take out tensioner for inspection, if I can't pull out rear wedge? PS Compression is ok, spark plugs looks nice, she drove with that noise ~7 km and it didn't become louder.

Great pictures...... I've never heard of the chain tensioner being a weak point and I've been on the Deauville forum (same engine) for 10 years and my NTV650 has done 130k miles. Don't know much about the transalp but are you sure the engine is the same?..... looks different to me. Might be helpful to give more details about the noise..... does it occur when in neutral, does it speed up when you rev the engine, what sort of noise is it.... knocking, rattling. You're measuring the wear correctly but for a noise to suddenly appear suggests to me that its not wear, which would gradually come on over a period of time. Has the bike just been serviced? Could one of the valve adjustment tappets come loose?... happened to my cb750 many years ago.

I agree with the previous 2 posters BTW, the photo's look remarkably similar to some I uploaded a long time ago: GvS

Thanks for the advice, indeed the oil pump chain was very loose. In the Haynes manual I found nothing about oil pump chain, it seems it has no tensioner, how could it start to make noise suddenly? I have to dismount clutch, sprocket-wheel and just replace chain with new and that's it? Thanks!

Yes, sadly Mr Honda didn`t think to give any thought to an adjuster, so it`s a replace the chain job.
