were did you go rj..? me and the missus done west crete back in the day on a 250 suzuki dirt/enduro thing roads were rough but empty done a good bit of the south and west done the road from plakias to horas sfakion intending to catch ship around island.......that was the plan got flagged down and arrested by plod, held at gunpoint for about 20 mins till he realised we were safe kept in station as officer cleaned uzi/rifle then swung around room slowly while he sighted it..right into my chest.. let go to await bike owners bike office bods turned up for major slagging contest on station steps lots of shouting and posing with hands on guns.... ;D frankocastello, was weird. a dead straight road into an old fort. it had that 'david lean lawrence of arabia' heat effect as you approached not much there but the road was cool also did school boy map reading error.. took the short route to the west from plakias...yes i know now.. any way me and the missus started out in shorts and tshirts catching the rays and ended up freezing our bits off as we ascended the nearby mountain. got to the top and had a resounding round of applause from some germans having some sort of festival in the town centre at top-ish of mountain.... ;D oh and chased by dogs everywhere...

Hi Jaz, We were based in Kamisiana on the North coast near Kolimbari. For the most part of the holiday we did not have a car, in the early part walking to the Moni Gonias monastery which was a hot but interesting walk. On another day we took a bus to Chania (having watched a youtube video our expectations were a tad to quaint..) Busy dusty and ok. The old town was ok but the rest was just busy dusty and hot. The food was great, specifically the goat which I tried in a few different ways, we found a small chap round the corner from the apartment with a very small restaurant who raised his own goats. Top place: tavernemichalis.canalblog.com/archives/2012/04/23/24086477.html?fb_action_ids=10151191366359252&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=246965925417366We then hired a car for 3 days. Great roads: www.hondantv.co.uk/rjcrete2012.phpDay1 We drove down the main road (dual carriageway) no central reservation with the slow lane doubling as a hard shoulder, which you straddle, as it narrows with either overgrow bushes, or less tarmac on occasion. Interesting times.. Past Souda and over the mountain to Hora Sfakion. All tarmac road and what turned out to be the largest (widest) roads of the trip. We drove over in time for lunch then had a quick dip to cool off after lunch. Retrace to the apartment. Day2 An early start and up over the mountain the other way to Elafonisi. We arrived early hitting the beach at 9am making us 3, 50% of the people wading out to the island. We then had two hours to snorkel and chill out, which was ideal as the temperature was starting to mount and the first signs of 'general' tourists were starting to come out to 'our' island.. On returning to the crossing point looking back to the main beach we were faced with approaching 300 tourists on the sun loungers!! Time to run as more coaches arrived and push my way out past about 30 cars trying to get onto the beach! We then headed up the West coast (The narrowest roads of the trip) through Sfinari stopping at a very interesting Mom & Pop restaurant tagged onto the end of the cliff. Basically if you build on the edge or overhanging a cliff nobody can take the view.. (That would seem the principal) Day 3Back down the main road to Chania, almost had a bump in Chania, very confused at a road junction stopped and the poor lass behind me could have hit me up the ass. (Thankfully she did not and all was fine after that ;-) ) Then we headed out over Akrotiri and drove up into the hills past Moni Gouvernetou and up to Moni Katholikou. Moni Katholikou was actually shut and we were not properly dressed anyway (one for next time). The plan had been to park there and walk onto the Katholikou Cave. We then drove via Stavros and Horafakia back over to Souda and the military cemetery. Some 1500 allied troops died trying to defend the island from a German assault with running battles across the island to evacuation point at Horn Sfakion. It was the first Allied Cemetery I have visited. At the time apparently, the British were aware the Germans were going to attack and strategically chose to lose the island. This thought did make me debate to myself the waste/ point of war.. I realise there was a a bigger picture, but stood in the cemetery, it did make me think. (pleased I am not a general) Back in the car we headed for the Therissou canyon just South of Chania, nice road but getting tired of driving at this point so we headed back to the apartment for lunch and a glass of wine.
