GvS: thanks, I think I have done it correctly. Several other places mentioned the simple but effective 'clacking-test', just taking the valve rockers and rattling them up and down. If you can do that, it's in the 'lobes down' position. As both one inlet valve and the outlet valve still had the tappet in, I could do that. Plus I checked the timing mark on the flywheel of course The engine is running very similar to before I put my hands on it as far as I can tell, I didn't notice any difference. I think even I would immediately hear the difference should I have done it incorrectly, right? If it's running 'horribly'? I'll be coming to Utrecht tonight and visit/sleep at my mothers' place and go to the Motorbeurs tomorrow with my friends, you enjoy yourselves! Thanx for the handshake in Utrecht !! great to have met you Read more: ntvhonda.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=enginecooling&thread=1812&page=3#ixzz1of4mQPvS

Grrrr!! No question (yet?), just venting my frustration at having to dismantle so much to get to the tappets on an NTV!!!!! Have been gently unsticking allthe rubber hoses above front cylinder, patience starting to go! Have NEVER done the tappets because of this, tho I am normally v diligent on other bikes. I did manage to replace all 4 plugs a while back, though it took me an hour and was very fiddly! Thin fingers an advantage.
What a palaver, really!

Well, two observations having finally got into the tspoets and adjusted them:
1. You don't need to take off the rafiator side covers or front cover (3 of my side cover fasteners were totally rotten, seized solid) to remove the radiator. However, the top mounting bolt fouls on one of the fan mounts - but not much, it will come out with gentle hamnering (long screwdriver). You do have to remove the rafiator to get the front tappet cover out of the frame to see underneath it. P.I.T.A.
2. Despite not being adjusted for at least 7-8 years/26K miles, tappets were just about perfect. I slightly adjusted the two exhaust tappets (Just outside tolerance, but only just). I do change oil and filters frequently, but on this bike I don't do much more.
So, my advice? If you have a lovely NTV, do the tappets now and then (maybe 15-20k). However, if it's a hack, prob not worth bothering!
