My Blond in Black Leather has decided that we go touring in the Belgian Ardennen, Luxembourg and the Vogezen mountains N. France in May - we have good tent sleeping bags etc - but before taking on such a long journey I'd like to check out a few things on the bike especially changing the oil in the front forks. The problem is I'm not sure what type of NTV I've got - Is it P S or T When I check the frame number with the table in the Haynes manual mine is not on the list

That's because the haynes manual shows the RC22 for the Revere.... (RC22 = Revere 600) You have a Revere 650, so that table goes right out the window Actually the spacer inside the fork (on top of the spring, right under the top cap) is the best indication for what kind of forks you have (they could have been replaced by NTV 650 ones....and they are different!) Scratch that....check the spring against the haynes guide....some data is missing, but it should be obvious...the difference is quite severe. I'll have a quick look in the books to see what I did.....if only my memory was better The P, S and T models are NTV 650 (not Revere) so it's not those... A.f.a.i.k. the J model is the earliest Revere model, from 88, being the only version where the rear suspension wasn't adjustable with an easy to locate knob (it required tools) So logically seen it should be a K or M model if you do have the adjuster ( Km....I should have known...) That's the amount of oil I used and it was fine afterwards. (You do have a revere right? the one with two separate handlebar pieces?)

eh yes, I think it should be the correct tool.....but I am mostly guessing from what I know the shock looks like, as I have never seen the actual tool for the NTV (although the hawk on looks similar) From what I gathered getting the adjuster to budge can be a bit tricky, but once it gets going it shouldn't be very hard. (Just trying to remember....I believe the ring you are looking for is on the top end of the shock...)
But that does mean it's a J alright.....but make sure you keep in mind that you have a 650 and not a 600 when servicing with the manual.

btw, just working on mine....an my id plate looks very different I'll see if I have a pic Its all a bit confusing - 5 days before we leave and I dont even know what type of bike I have with all the extra weight on the bike I really would like to get the fork oil changed before we leave - It should be a simple job like the rear shocker but that wont budge no matter what I do - where would we all be without a forum to solve all our problems ;D

I think I missed this thread the first time around. It should be a simple job like the rear shocker but that wont budge no matter what I do The C Spanner is normally the right way to adjust the spring pre-load. On the NTV, you should have a knob behind the left side panel to do this remotely. Take a look behind the side panel for a black knob approx 2 inches diameter. Screwing it down increases the pre-load. If you want to adjust the damping, you may find a screw head (straight blade) to do this at the bottom of the shock absorber. There will be three settings. Fully anticlockwise = soft Middle = standard Fully clockwise = hard Hope this helps where would we all be without a forum to solve all our problems ;D Very good point - so pleased we're all getting so much out of the forum
