This morning the Brezan shop called me to say that he couldn't order the Honda thermostat from his usual suppliers. And that, if I wanted one, he would order it at cmsnl.com. So he suggested that I'd order it myself here: www.cmsnl.com/honda-ntv650_model1227/ Now I thought that the good news was that cmsnl is located in the same town as I work. So I could just go & get the parts in my lunch-break, right ;D No, wrong! I called cmsnl and they say it's impossible to collect parts from their office............. So now I'm still waiting for the thermostat. GvS

Received the thermostat from CMSNL: Checked that it's good working order by hanging it by a string in boiling water: It does work: Left = open = hot Right = closed = cool Now all I've got to do is fit it (& will do that as soon as I've got the rest of the bike put together again.....) GvS

real test of this is to record the temp as it starts to open and the temp when it's fully open.. so put it in there when the water is cold and start to boil

Chaps
I think I have an overheating prob and suspect the thermostat. I took a look with the tank off over the week-end and getting the 4 bolts off holding the housing / cover looked impossible unless you have a tool that undoes bolts around corners! I don't have a tool that will touch even the easiest looking bolt. Can anyone give me any advice (I'm doing a bike tour in 9 days and really don't need the worry I'm going to overheat!)
I have a 98 Deauville.

If your thermostat isn't working correctly, the engine would probably be running too cool. Have you checked if there is enough coolant in the radiator? (Just checking the tank isn't good enough, you really must get the cap off the radioator)

yes, checked the rad and it didn't need much topping up. I think I may have overfilled both the rad and the reservoir, could that have led to the escaping fluid?

You cannot overfill the radiator; it just has to be full. You can overfill the small tank. The tank is used as an overflow for when the cooling system gets hot.
