Can someone please explain what "undertaking" is ? Hi Franklin Undertaking is passing another vehicle on the wrong side So in the UK: overtaking is when the faster vehicle passes to the right of a slower vehicle (ie Faster one is on the right during the manouvre) Undertaking is when the faster vehicle passes to the left of the slower one (ie Faster one is on the left during the manouvre) I've always understand that this was illegal in the UK, but I'm not completely certain. The Highway Code www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070314 Rule 163 is the only reference I could find, and it only says "you should not" unless the slower car is indicating to turn right and there is space to do so. There is also a law that says you should stay in lane on Motorways and Dual Carriageways and maintain the flow of traffic. It is permissible therefore to "undertake" if you are in the middle or even left hand lane, if your lane is moving faster than the ones to your right. As with a lot of laws, compliance is a matter of judgment and it's not something the police seem to take a lot of interest in, however, in the event of an accident, watch out if you undertook, you're likely to be automatically having to defend your decision. We all have pet hates, mine include: People who do undertake (If they're going past me they are likely to be exceeding the speed limit by a considerable margin) Those who hog the outer lanes and do not make good progress. People who are forever swapping and changing lanes to try and exploit the differing speeds in the lanes People who tailgate

in short i never sit behind em and expect them to move over for a real bike, respect is earned and definatly not given to over chromed tractor riders, and if i ever have a argument with one i would mention "susspension" and "silencers" and "braking power that works" in every sentance. With you there illegal. Why should they be treated any differently to any other road abuser? I like my bikes to clean clean and nice, but I'd always rather be riding them and getting the most out their performance too

undertaking = rechts inhalen. Or in the UK links inhalen I only do that when there is no traffic in the first lane as cars seem to park there and the bits in between stay empty....these empty stretches can be quite long, and when traffic is moving slowly it would be a waste not to use the space. As always, extra care is taken to make sure I don't get surprised by people/cars/busses etc. McF: My pet pieves are mostly people that stay in the 'fast lane', tailgaters and people who are doing anything and everything BUT driving. You know the ones....on the phone or reading a map....weaving all over the place and getting upset if you warn them about this.

On my way back from London last night I was in heavy traffic with one idiot weaving around and no lights on (not entirely dark, but getting that way). I thought it was an odd thing and more odd that no-one seemed to be pointing out the absence of lights. I may be paranoid, but I then recalled reading an article about gun crime in our cities. Apparently an initiation rite for some gangs is to go out in your "hot rod" without your lights on. You then have to fire at least one round (bullet) into the first car to flash you I googled and found this, so it's probably a load of bollix, but the car I saw last night looked scary enough! PS - Jaz, it was in the Chiswick area too!

I know the gangs in the USA do what you described as an initiation, I've not heard of it happening over here though. I supposed it only takes some half-wit gangbanger wannabe to see it on tv or online to try it.

as a general rule i will alway argue that i was filtering when undertaking, if a car is not doing the speed limit in the outer lane then HEY!.. any lane is good,. Bikes have always has to put up with road restrictions/signs/speed limits all intended to govern car drivers because by nature they think slower, are much bigger and slower to manouver, all those no U turns are there so the road is not blocked by a car waiting to do it or it's to dangerous, all those no right turns exept busses and cycles make me mad.. why not motorcycles? i did that turn once at the bottom of gower st into new oxford st in London only to see plod waiting, he stopped me, we went back to the sign and i pointed out it said "bicycles" "busses" "taxis" "for access only", i then showed him my valid tax disc which says "bicycle" i also told him i was delivering in oxford st (which was a porky), he told me i was taking the pi** but let me off... mohahahaha.. the point is that bikes don't get in the way even when safely undertaking...

showed him my valid tax disc which says "bicycle". Nice thinking ;D I was cautious yesterday in Lundun at many sets of traffic lights, where there was a car length at the lights themselves with a large bicycle painted in the area. I patiently waited behind the cars rather than plonk myself in this box. On my way out I did see a lot of bikes (mainly scooterettes which looked like guys doing the "knowledge, but a few proper bikes) pull right forward and into this box. Looked like a safe and sensible thing to do, but I know I would be the one plod made an example of!

Ha Ha My anti McF squad are closeing in on you McF............lol Curses and confound you. I gave them the slip though, turned my stealth mode on, (which transmits a signal making the mighty Pan appear like a Ford Mondeo) I was worried earlier this morning! Went out for breakfast and on the way back in walked past the mighty Pan. Thought "I can hear ticking", walked back and I could. "Never heard that before" and started the search at the back of my mind "it isn't a bomb is it?" then rationally thinking "don't be stupid" "If it is a bomb, I should report this and leave it alone" "B@gger it, I'm going to find out what this is" and continued looking. It sounded like it was coming from under the top shelter (the plastic cover that resembles a fuel tank - this is where the air filter and a load of electrical stuff is) The batteries must be on the way out on my disk lock - and it's emitting a loud rythmic click. I keep the lock in one of the "glove boxes". It's wrapped in a plastic bag (keep it dry and reduce rattling about). As soon as I opened the glove box, the ticking got louder and when I removed the lock from the bag it is quite loud. With reference to your comment above, I should have taken the bomb threat a lot more seriously!!! Lock is back in the "glove box", so you will hear it later today when I sneak into Loomies - undetected and see my Tea Pushers for a brew.

good points ilegal. We should be able to do more and to be fair i am sure most bikers probably do and most won't get caught.... ;D McF the ASL are for bicycles but until now i always use the outside lane to pop into that space. (Don't see why on a straight road why any bicycle would want to be on the outside in front of all the traffic as they wobble away slowly form the lights..accident waiting to happen in my eyes... ) Not got a tug yet, but have read about it. Tho i am sure plod do have more interesting things to keep them occupied in the big city. Pretty sure if you approach at a sensible speed and with plenty of good obs, few could really object. To be fair most car users will pull over while bikes filter if traffic is jammed up (thanks car drivers). personally, i think that the most dangerous time for me is not the cars but other bikers. the cars i got the measure of, but bikes (scooter aaagghh!!) will... Cut in. Overtakes when not safe. Undertake at will. Push, harry and bully others into executing manoeuvres, unnecessarily, when the rider is obviously not ready of able to do so. regularly see foreign plated scooters on the run to work doing the most stupid things... (the death and injury rate among these must be the highest per speed of any road user.. ) a few i have seen are pulling up on my LEFT hand side to execute a RIGHT turn. And tried to do it while i went straight on.... (left them happily trying to ignore the little chat with the anglo saxon using drivers of the cars behind that they blocked in.. ;D ) While i was placed at the far right shoulder of the car in front, Under taking me on the right, as i turned right, Using the few inches between me and the kerb ride safe & enjoy.

I do love being in such a mean biker gang. You can always tell when we are in town. The silent streets, twitching curtains, worried parents and frightened children; hushed tones on street corners as the police warn that the gravy and tea pushers are in your town!! The NTV G&T Gang
