Hi all,
I've just added a 'newbie' post and have a spot of trouble I'd appreciate a bit of advice on.
Bought a 'laid up' NTV and serviced it and it isn't charging whilst running. Battery is on an optimate whilst not being used but done a 100 mile trip yesterday and had to bump-start it sa the starter motor turned the engine but slowly. Bought a multimeter this morning and battery is reading 12.98 without engine running. Run engine and this falls to 12.58 at 3,000 revs (same reading at tickover) I've got a Haynes manual and done the leakage test (which was 0.1 ma) and started doing checks and discovered it's got 2 rectifiers on it (one disconnected)! I disconnected the'live' one and got the 12.58 with the ignition on (engine not running) same reading on the unconnected one.
What I'm struggling with is the alternator stator check - the manual says to take reading with ohms x 1 (which my multimeter doesn't appear to have)
Guess the previous owner changed the rectifier to no avail and gave up with it - but before I change the stator I wonder if you could help me narrow things down to either it (alternator) or the rectifier (he could have put a duff one on it) without having to but another multimeter!
I await your expertise

I have managed to determine the problem - its the rectifier that is at fault - the Alternator stator is fine
So do I go new, pattern or used rectifier - your views please?

I would probably go for a pattern one - the originals are madly expensive or maybe a good used Ebay one. Unusual failure though as they tend to be fairly reliable.

Hi!
Think I replied to your other post - I had a duff reg-rect too, and discovered a spare unit from a mate to also be duff.
I got a secondhand one, ebay £12, but think under £25 more likely. New seems kind of expensive to me. Obviously, do the multimeter checks on a used one before you install it. Take out the toolbox and fit it there, leave the old reg rect where it is as it's a pain to get out (93 650P). Quick and easy!!
Good luck!
