I have a 1997 NTV650 and the temperature gauge normally reads just into the very bottom of the 'normal' sector, and appears to be faulty. I have checked the thermostat in a pan of water (opens at around 90 degrees) and also the resistance of the sender at different temperatures, which also appears to be okay. If I ground the sensor wire, the gauge goes full scale, and checking the ground connection at the instrument also shows no resistance to the frame. I guess the gauge must be faulty, but any other suggestions or advice would be welcome.
Thanks. Dave.

I think your gauge sounds fairly normal. NTVs seem to be known for appearing to run cool on their gauges, but actually to be running at normal temp. Mine used to be like this and then I damaged my speedo and ended up replacing the clocks with a Koso all-in-one unit. This will display the water temp digitally and mine mostly runs between 70-80C, even though it was at the bottom of normal on the standard gauge. I can see the temp rise and then stabilise when the thermostat opens.
The only slightly odd thing I notice is that the coolant temp stabilises at a lower temp (60-70C) in the winter. I could understand this if the sender was some distance from the thermostat, but it seems odd when they are both in the same housing.
Having had my bike nearly 2 years and being fairly confident it's working correctly, the coolant temp no longer bothers me. Having done the checks you have, my advice would be to get on and enjoy riding it!

I agree with Gills's post above. If there's something wrong, the needle would not even enter the "normal range". See my siteGvS

Hi all I've just bought an NTV 600 and it rides great but the temp guage goes straight to red when you switch the ignition on , do you think I would be right in thinking the temp sensor is faulty and needs changing . I'm new to the site having just signed up Cheers all

Have you checked your coolant level in the radiator - not the expansion tank? you have to remove the petrol tank to check. the gauge sender is up the top so if low on water it won't be submerged potentially giving dodge readings.
Otherwise either the sensor, gauge or wiring, in my experience the sensors change Ohms resistance as the temperature rises, there will probably be a cold (25°) and a hot test value in the Honda service manual - or maybe even the Haynes. To test set to ohms and touch the spade then an earth or neg of the battery.
There is a separate sensor in the radiator for the fan so the fan may still work even if the gauge is giving wrong info.
