Hi guys, going to change the seals on my '92 revere . as it was the only thin on a mot fail yesterday. Ive bought the seals along with the dust seals but am unabe to find a step by step guide. Basically im not sure how much new oil to put into the forks after changing seals. And also (a newbie question) but which way do the seals go in, ie there is a spring in the seal, does that go up or downwards? Anything else i need to look out for? Many thanks, Mark T

Here's a link to a previous thread: ntvhonda.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=help&action=display&thread=3164. The front fork internals changed a number of times during the production run, which affects the amount of oil that is specified. I suspect yours is the middle one so should be 466cc of oil with the level 123mm from the top of the fork, with fork compressed and spring out. (Online manual here, if you don't have one: wbieniec.kis.p.lodz.pl/moto/ntv/indexe.html. Section 6 for forks.) Honda specified ATF, rather than fork oil. Most people use 5W or 10W fork oil now, although some have used 15W for a firmer ride.

I'm pretty sure the spring should be on the bottom (to resist the pressure from inside the fork).

You are correct, spring facing down the way.

hmm on closer inspection, it seems theres springs on both sides of the seal. one side has a deep groove, and the other has a smaller groove. Im confused now

I'd guess deeper side down. I think the OEM seals had writing on one side only and this was meant to face up when installed. Don't know if this will be the same for all....

Whenever I take a bike for an MOT, I always make sure that the stanchions are thoroughly wiped clear of any oil traces...... it won't fail on the seals then. I know people will say you should just replace the seals but when everythings freezing, you might not feel like doing it at that moment!!.
