D'Oh!
Trying to test a suspect reg/rectifier (93 650P), looking at Haynes, Ch 9, p21 - there's a table of ohmmeter readings for the 7 (4+3) terminals.
But can I get any sense in real life? - I seem to get infinite resistance betweeen ANY two terminals, so I think I'm doing summat wrong (and probably VERY silly!).
Stole reg/rect off mate's "spare for parts" 650 Bros (he foolishly has a set of garage keys at my house) and got same results, so now I REALLY think it's me. However, his "spares" bike is a total shagger IMHO with everything knackered...is there an outside chance BOTH are U/S?
Can anyone explain how to use the table to test the d**n thing please? I AM testing the reg/rect end, not the loom end of the plugs.
Background is that I've had 2 new batteries since May (shop replaced 1st one, refusing now). Batteries won't hold a charge enough to even start bike once. (however, ORIGINAL battery, unused since May, charges up enough to start/use/run bike for a week!) Bike charging at 18V (suggesting duff reg/rect?), leakage test gets 5mA (should be less than 1mA, so not goos...but not awful??).
Think I've prob got a duff bike, but the new batteries aren't great either - despite what shop say.

I think you`ve answered your own question: Bike charging at 18V (suggesting duff reg/rect?) I would say you`re correct, and that 18 volts will FRY any new batteries pretty quickly too.

True - but if I can't understand how to test the darn things, I can't check if a spare is ok or not. Also, Haynes suggests an alternator test first (I think from memory) - if I can test the reg and prove it duff, I hope to avoid further pulling apart of the bike.
Funny how the ORIGINAL battery that came with it has coped MUCH better than the new ones though...that should be total junk.

I had a very similar problem. Ended up getting a new reg/rec as has same problem getting a straight answer wit hte Haynes tests. Turned out to be corrosion on the starter solenoid and main fuse. Some connectors were a little dirty too. It just needed a clean up and it was right as rain. So check your connector blocks and the main fuse and where the wires go into the starter solenoid, mush cheaper than a new reg/rec... HTH

Ta - will give that a shot! Will have to buy a new battery, so would be great not to buy reg/rect too.
Will let you know how it goes...

Hi, if you do a search you will find a few suggestions. I had the identical problem with readings on the reg/rec! Drove me nuts. One of the members on here sent me a replacement reg/rec but I had already realised the battery was definitely u/s. I replaced both and have had no more trouble. Mine charges up to about 13. somethng volts and then regulates which seems about right. 18v sounds like the reg/rec needs replacing to me for what it's worth. Just try a used one. By the way, I tried using an old analogue multi meter and got some ohms readings from the reg rec at least but nothing at all that made sense from a digital meter. funny isn't it. Hope you get it fixed, very annoying.

Cheers Rod - there is a warning that the tests don't work with some digi meters, so that's useful confirmation. Annoyingly, my analogue meter no longer works on Ohms function...
Pikey, I AM nearby you...do u still have a reg/rect for sale if it comes to that, or is that old news?
Cheers folks - will look today or at weekend.

Thanks all for patient support! Now got working reg/rect from eBay seller:
edd_wood( 12812)
£8 buy it now, arrived 2 days later, cleaned in paraffin before sending!
Seems to check out on analogue meter (whereas mine is u/s on almost all counts, mate's spare one is "a bit duff").
Plugged it into bike, charges at 14V. Happy NTV owner!
But now I've another prob. On the NTV650P, the reg/rect is bolted to the INSIDE of the metal bracket, but inside of that is plastic batt box/mudguard and also the shock. Is there a trick to getting it out, or do I need to take wheel/shock off?
Thought I'd ask first, but can't see an easy way. Am considering mounting it on OUTSIDE of metal bracket (similar to BROS 650) and throwing away tool box to give space. Shame though, as mine has the tool kit.
(my owner profile's not looking good, is it! Probs with forks, now electrics.)

Just to update: (since another owner may have this issue at the mo) I fitted my new unit in the toolbox space, now carry tools in topbox. All has been well for 4 years, daily commuter for last couple of years too.
Moral of the story - if the tests give odd results, maybe the tests ARE working, your parts are just duff!
Thanks team for help.
