I know of a Motorbike Engineering company that can make these - most likely for a reduced price.
If anyone has a spare set or can overlay a picture of them with some measurements then I'll ask for a price.

if that engineering company could make bungs instead, that would be a lot simpler and just as effective, probably cheaper to make as well.

There's a company in the States that do them for the Hawk ( www.hiperform.com/frame_sliders.htm), so should be possible for a reasonable cost, I would have thought.

All you'd need is the same slightly longer, stainless engine mount bolt as is used to mount those crash bars, and some nice long bungs to protect the rad. I would definately pay for that seeing as I'd probably be able to use them with the fairing as well. It just needs to be a hard wearing composite tube of whatever, even metal? (titanium sliders, for sparky fun ) surely much easier to manufacture, no special tools, can be made in any batch quantities. If someone can find a company that could do this, I will pledge to get one of the lot straight away, it's basically top of my list for stuff I'd like to add to my bike.

If it's just 'crash-bungs' which people are after, then a simple peice of Polyurethane rod (probably around 30-50mm Diameter), stick it in a lathe to shape, add some stainless fasteners = job done
I reckon 2x sets out of a £20 peice of rod, a replacement front engine bolt, extended in length to mount them, £10-£15. Plus some tooling time & associated attatchments.
My estimates would be £30-£50 a set - which is near-ish the same a R&G 'bungs'. This is just a guess & not what I've spoken to any companies about.
Next time I'm visiting Maz I'll ask about the costs & get a couple of sets made for some-one to review.

how hard wearing is polyurethane? What are commercial bungs made of?
The hawk bungs look quite long and I would be concerned about the material fracturing if it digs in/catches the ground, or if it wears too fast.
Would metal be a better material in any way?
Also, those R&G bung kits, are they universal?

I believe polyurethane come in different grades, just like aluminium or S/S. Depending on the grade, depends on it's use.
High(er) spec cars use Poly' bushes for suspension, I think skate-board wheels are made of them also.
There's also high density nylon which I don't know anything about.
'Crash-bungs' are designed to be the 1st point of contact when the bike goes down & are very sturdy & lasts a few falls.
'Crash-mushroom' take the impact & deform - acting like a crumple-zone & have to be replaced each time.
I wouldn't trust either of them over 10mph to protect my bike - above those speeds there's too much mass-movement.
The Engineer I know used to race the TT & shuold know the best type of materials & mountings to either protect or delibertly sheer if the forces are too great (which should protect the font engine mount bolt)

To get a 'feeler' on the sort of prices which is considered resonable, how much would people be considering to to exchange for.
- A Set of 'crash-bars' similar in style to the ebay link above?
- A Set of 'crush-bungs', (with replacement front engine bolt) similar to the R&G's?
Also a 'rough' idea on how many people would want them. i,e: If I ask the company to make 5x of each then I might be able to get a very good discount.
my thoughts would be £50 delivered for the bars & £35-£40-ish for the bungs & I'm going to put my name down for some bungs.

I'd like to put my name down for some bungs. Just need to check how long they'll be, I've got a fairing on and theres quite a gap between the end of the frame and the fairing. If you could get dimensions for both then I'll let you know my choice.
If I can fit a set of bars down there then I might give them a try, more places to clamp stuff like lights and tool tubs on, i'll have to measure and think.

Sounds v good to me. Thanks for your efforts in looking into this.
