Well, the collector (that's the box thingy) needs to either be replaced or repaired. Unfortunately replacing it means a new exhaust system all together as I don't believe those kind of collectors are available anymore. The other option would take my preference, find a local metalworking shop and ask them to weld a nice new piece of steel in to it. Haven't ever done this myself, but from what I hear it shouldn't be too expensive.
I just realized, there is always the option of replacing it with a second-hand one....if you can find it, and still this should proof to be more expensive then welding it.

It definately shouldn't be too expensive because it's not that difficult at all!
Norfolk had to have this done to his collector box when that nearly disintigrated, luckily enough we had Paul to do ours, if you lived a bit closer I'd ask him for you, but it'd mean posting exhausts to and fro, pricey business!

A decent welder should be able to repair or even reconstruct for you. Welding is not a skill of mine, but I do understand that gas welding is the way to go. My local guy is excellent and virtually rebuilt a collector chamber for me, charging a very reasonable £30 or so.

Here's a second-hand exhaust for sale: link.marktplaats.nl/233365517But it's an exhaust for a Hawk. Apparently the fixing point/points are different. Does someone know how difficult it would be to modify this ? Franklin

am rebuilding my zorst and in the meantime i have shoved(technical term) a pair of vw tailpipes up it. sounds absolutely gorgeous and tempted to keep it as is till mot time,it also seems to have had a very pleasing effect on power as well and the downshift gurgle is sexy thru tunnels etc.

jcb, the VW tailpipe thing sounds interesting. Is there a centre stand on your bike? Is there clearance? Any pics? So many questions!

hello micawber, the vw exhaust trims,as vw call them, fit straight into the downpipes, couldnt have wished for a better fit.you can see them in my for sale advert in the pic.dont think a centre stand or not reall matters as they sit in quite short and tidy.and at £4 each ,bit of a bargain i think for a full chrome end n baffle. hope it helps. and i guarantee you wont be disapointed lol. cheers.

jcb, I see that you can get those VW tailpipe trims in stainless, flared, slash-cut or unbaffled varieties, which makes it a very attractive, cheap, option. But if, as you suggest, they fit inside the downpipes, what stops them falling out at some inconvenient time (as Sod's Law dictates they must) and disappearing into the undergrowth when you are miles from home?
Although I am a belt and braces sort of guy, I draw the line at drilling holes in the ends of my nice stainless down pipes to put a screw in! Unless I can devise some sort of support at the other end of the pipes to take the load off the cylinder head bolts, as they would be under a strain too. There is nowhere locally where I can get a look at some. Now I've got the idea I can't leave it alone. I like the idea of an "invisible" exhaust similar to the ER-6n on a budget.
If I can find a way round these potential problems, you might have started an NTV trend! Are there any photos on another site that got you started on this, or did you hear about it by word of mouth? I would be interested to hear from others who might have tried these as a long term solution rather than a stop gap for the rusty exhaust problem, especially re long term plug or weak mixture potential problems.
I have a perfectly good, reliable NTV with good economy and an e-marked stainless silencer but you always like to try new ideas don't you? (Well, I do) Especially if cheap! Because I can always go back to what I've got now if it doesn't work out.
Micawber.

yes, well i used that age ole technical solution of hammering them in with a large block of wood then riding them a final big tap with said wood, have had them in for a couple of weeks now and have ridden hard,no signs of falling out even at full throttle so i guess they are in there for a long while.my plan is to add a pair of slash cut stainless tubes over the top onto the downpipes and secure with a clamp on each and then a small hidden mount to take any wieght off the ex port mounts, easy stuff .,job done i think.i did ask down the mot station and he saw no problem at mot time as the baffling was in his words "just right" without producing harsh and horrific noise that some "race exhausts" produce. and she certainly performs much better and sounds great at any speed or even thumping away at tickover and pops n grunts on the overun quite pleasingly i,and many chop builders have used these trims on a vast amount of bikes in the past, often hidden inside "fake" exhaust tubes shaped however we wanted. im thinking on the ntv it would be aneasy way of adding underseat pipes,o god here we go ,trub with being into home custom, design n fabrication is the ideas never stop lol.must resist the grinder, must hide the mig, aaaaghhh.# perhaps i wont sell her then ,maybe ill just cut that bit off n then........
