Centre stand To Remove or Fit

Current question prompting this fact file.
Recently I purchased a centre stand (with pin & spring) from a second-hand website.
My NTV never had a centre stand ("cheapo version").
Today I tried to fit the centre stand, but I couldn't.
It looks as if the pin has to be fitted from the right-hand (exhaust) side.
On the left-hand side the bracket on which the side-stand safety switch is fitted is in the way. And this bracket is welded to the chassis.
Can someone please verify that the pin is fitted / removed from the exhaust side ?
This means that I will have to remove the exhaust before I will be able to fit the centre stand (my NTV has the later version (longer) muffler).
Any other suggestions / tips ?
Because I really do not want to remove this exhaust: it's fine now and I don't want to break anything.

Auntys' centre stands are on a shaft with a split pin at either end and secured to the frame by clamps. On the face of it- simple. Loosen the clamps, take out a split pin and pull out the shaft. But the shaft won't go to the left because of the sidestand mounting, and won't go to the right because the exhaust is in the way.

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the stand without dismantling the exhaust? That is, can you manoeuvre the shaft about so that it will come clear? - It's not an urgent job for me; the stand is solid and I give the joint a squirt of spray grease now and then, but it would be nice to give it a proper clean and lube. I just don't want to get low down and dirty to wrestle with it if I'm wasting my time.

I managed to *fit* the stand to mine with the exhaust still on. It's Motad, mind, not the standard suitcase jobbie. Once you get the pin free of the l/h clamp, the whole thing will twise enough to clear the motad's collector...

Looked at my bike yesterday with a view to fitting a new centre stand (costly I know, but I bought all the Honda bits from David Silver) - doesn't like there's any chance of fitting it without taking the (stubby) exhaust off to me.
Let me know if you manage to get your stand off more simply!! - If I manage ultimately to put mine on easier I'll shout!

It makes sense that once you get the shaft clear of one of the clamps you should be able to twist it down to some extent. I'm still not sure that it would be enough to clear the standard exhaust.
Tweaker- I'll leave it until I'm in the mood. I've a better idea- you try it first and let me know.

Had a look at the pivot problem while the project bike is stripped. The shaft that goes through the stand has a shoulder on the right had side and a split pin on the left . So it cannot be drawn out to the right and the silencer stops it from the left.
Looking at the parts fiche all the shafts have a shoulder on the silencer side so you are unable to pull it out to left.

Oh yes, so it is.
Ta, Pops. So it looks like no way could the shaft be angled to remove it without removing the exhaust. End of story. Thanks for the interest folks.

Could you get in between the exhaust and the pin with a dremel (or even a sharp file) and take the head off, to let it out to the left?

Phew, a bit drastic. Would you not have the problem of securing the shaft when you reassemble it? Probably easier to take the exhaust off in the first place?

I agree with you.Just had another look at it,the shoulder is only about 4mm.If you took that off you hardly have any meat to put a split pin.

But the shaft is clamped at each end. Can't see it going anywhere with the clamp bolts snugged down?
I agree it's a "shadetree" option, but knowing how awkward it is to get the exhaust off if the downpipes are rusted to the collector, I'd certainly keep it as an option. A crack torn in a rusty collector box would be a bugger to sort too...

Push it out to the right then bend/ twist the stand down to let the pin out to the left *outside* the left clamp.

But I thought we'd (well Pops did) established that the shaft can't be drawn out to the left because of the shoulder on the right.
Or are you suggesting that it will work if we move the shaft to the right far enough so that it clears the left clamp, and then we can angle the shaft down far enough for the stand to slip off the shaft?

IIRC (and it's a while since I did it) I ground half the rim off the head so that it'd go through the r/h clamp at an angle, slid the stand on, slid the pin the the right, located the stand, and slid the pin back. With a Motad, as previously noted.
doing that in reverse you *should* be able to get the stand out, yes, assuming the pin can slide to the right enough to clear the l/h clamp. If the bolt is removed from the clamp, it's pretty flexible and will bend the ten degrees or whatever you need to clear the l/h clamp and the sidestand switch.

Man alive - You guys have been busy discussing in my (2-3 week) absence!
I just bit the bullet and got my stubby silencer off to fit my new main stand.
Penetrating oil on the clamps and into the front end of the collector helped loosen the silencer from the downpipes .
The only downer I had was torquing up the LH pinch bolt blind without putting my brain in gear (pinch bolt .. that implies "little" pinching up of the hole doesn't it) .. followed the Haynes torque figure and well over-tightened the thing in the process .. when will I learn.

Tweaker tweaks a little too much on occasion then!
A bit like the tyre fitter on my daughter's car. Trying to undo the nuts the other day I had to use a jack on a long bar. Sounded like a shotgun going off when it finally released. d**ned strong threads on these car nuts though.

Yep - Over torquing is a long standing failing I am trying to get out of the habit of .. thought a torque wrench might help with the campaign, but I forgot to engage me brain and add in a little bit of scepticism!
- (Over) Tweaker!
