hi, Hope I'm posting this in the right section....excuse me if I'm not, I'm new! So heres the story, I bought a 1995 NTV650 abought a week and a half ago for the bargin price of £300. 60000ish miles on the clocks and rust in many places. Took it for atest ride to check out gears and that, all seemed well so I got it. I'm now stripping it ready to be despatched as my cb500 is rotten!!! It might seem extreme to see so much effort to put into a work bike but my thinking is better to prevent things then wait for stuff to go wrong and then loses money with time off fixing it! I'm also going for a 'be safe, be seen' paint scheme -watch this space! So here comes the pics!!! The Bike once I got it home (about 600meters away from where I bought it!!!) Heres the strip down horrors!!!Rust!!!! Bolts in frame are just for blanking purposes. The list of jobs are/were: * Clean/sand frame ready for paint * Clean/sand engine ready for refurb * Clean/polish pipes * Check loom & clean * Check Carbs;clean/balance * Replace HT leads * New Sparkies/oil/filter * K&N (and why not!!!) * Refurb shock/get new one.... * Refurb shocks; clean/spray/oil/seals * Respray wheels/bodykit +high viz Thats roughly jobs to do/done. Atm I've sent the shock away to get refurbed and its going to have a nice spring replace aswell. Parts I've bought: Hel brake lines, Red HT leads, Irridium plugs, tonnes opf paint (diy!!!), SS bolts/nuts, footpegs, oil/filter/sump nut/restore, K&N filter, LED indicators, HRC bits.

So my first job was the frame and engine. I stripped down the frame in the previous post and now I cleaned it using the jet wash and lots of degreaser, followed by paint thinners. Luckily I had a day of dry weather so I sanded down ready for primer then set about with the process of primer, 1200grit, primer, 1200grit, 1st coat, 1200 grit, 2nd coat, 1200 grit, 3rd coat, 1200 grit, 4th coat then left to cure in a very hot summer house heated by a non 'health and safety' portable heater. Heating each side of the frame seperatly gives it a very hard durable finish. The primer was halfords grey primer and the paint was hammerite satin black- I know you don't need primer with hammerite but its easier and better with!!! The white patch in the first image is where the frame had a slight dink in it and I filled it. Happened when I dropped it whilst taking the engine out...so I know it to be straight etc, just hit my engine trolly instead of the engine hitting the trolly!

hi, there, did you get it off ebay, if so i think i was bidding on her as well. What you have described so far is pretty much as i did mine, but she had done 134k, only difference is i didn't paint the engine just cleaned it. and i had the frame shot blasted and powder coated for 65 quid. They did a lovely job of it. I also painted the swing arm satin black and that looks great with the satin black frame. Where did you get the new front springs from, i have looked but can't find any at a decent price. And mine are a wee bit soggy now. You definatly did the right thing changing the front plug out the frame, i have had to make a special tool to make it easy for me to get out, took me along time to get it right.
let us see the finished product, cheers ed

hi, Hope I'm posting this in the right section That was a good place to start, but I have made your very own board - Restoration Projects You put me to shame! I did almost nothing on my restoration last year, beyond drag my sorry ass to the local specialist and have the and other structural items powder coated (Frame Silver, remainder black) I have a top end overhaul to carry out (blown head gaskets) and then mainly cosmetic work. I'm very impressed with the speed of work and the quality looks great. We're all going to be impressed, but Jazz will wet himself (when he gets back from holidays) with the photographic record - well done get yourself a free (virtual) drink from the club bar.

Hello once more everyone, thanks for all the great comments, to answer a few questions... @ smartiedarkblue: No not on ebay, but under a cover in my mates garden -it had been there for a year and a half before he finally decided he wasn't going to get round to 'cleaning it up'!lol so he sold it for a bargin price of £300 No new front springs but the shock i sent to get refurbed by firefoxracing. Will let you know on the quality of the job-if I ever get it back!!!! Hagon front springs seem reasonable on wemoto.com £60 and they are progressive!!! ;D @ yellowmelos: Paint/parts prob about £500 but I'm lucky as I have alot of tools, etc from a couple of earlier bike projects. paulie73: If only, love doing project bikes, still got a cb250rs that needs a good lick of paint and engine rebuild however I'm currently talking peace negotiations with my old man for using his garage for so long!!! Right for the last couple of days I've mainly been putting on the little fiddly bits on the bike, and spraying the swinger/forks and randoms. The loom is now on the bike, the engine is in the frame, rear mudguard assembly is on and the carbs are wedged in...they were harder then I thought they'd be!!! So the forks... I still have to take the tape off but they are curing atm in my summer house with my best friend atm...the portable heater!!! The footrest hangers were described as mouldy by my neighbour so I have decided to polish them up slightly-I wont go crazy as I know that they will get coated before long and paint wears out to quickly. A dull polish was my am therefore, I also fitted my new pegs and the HRC bits that I was dying to see against the frame!!! Heres what the bike is looking like now: Next jobs to do: Paint body kit and wheels, Reassemble swing arm and final drive(wait for shock!!!) Resemble front end I'm going down to the virtual bar now so see you there!!!

hey everyone, I will post a proper update tomoz. But for now I've discovered a problem. The lights on the dash dont come on?!? Fuses are all good, connectors clean and shiney. Headlight warning light comes on with headlight-but nothing else will aka oil/neutral/dial backing lights. Good earth at the r/h rear of the frame. Anyone got any ideas???...oh just so you know I hate electrics!!! please help!
thanks Ian
